Ex-First Dog Barney has died. He was 12.
One of the most outstanding intellects of the GWB administration, Barney pursued a canine agenda with humility and grace. He demonstrated by force of example the quiet dignity of a life of eating, sleeping, playing, and riding in a car. Although he never spoke of politics, his influence over his human's administration was palpable. He forged a path in which his human followed, all around the White House lawn. His opposition to vacuum cleaners and cats has had a lasting influence on American policy. His love of toys and children added warmth to a cold world which all too often ignored his wise direction.
We are all diminished by his passing. He will be missed.
