Should the NRA get out of the back pocket of the gun manufacturers and stop being their defacto lobbyists in Washington, they might have a little more legitimacy with the gun control advocates. I think Obama only nominated Kerry because he is sick of never being able to get any nominees for anything past Republicans in the Senate.

The Kerry nomination will likely result in the loss of a Democratic Senate seat to Republicans, so it is interesting that Obama is willing to sacrifice this. Brown's re-election will leave Democrats with a 52-46 majority in the Senate - too slim for comfort.

Shoorly there was some new nasty bit of dirt they could have thrown out there to give the impression that they were holding their noses while confirming him and making sure that his appointment would be seen as reflecting badly on Obama.

That's true, their more characteristic form as of late would be to always intend to confirm him but hold it up for 2 months while smearing him. It is a surprise they didn't do so, true. Maybe it means they have something worse up their sleeve.
