Most Senate Republicans Vote Against Hurricane Sandy Relief Bill

The Senate passed the Hurricane Sandy Relief bill yesterday. Astonishingly, 78% of Senate Republicans voted against it. http://thehill.com/blogs/floor-actio...to-obamas-desk

Boehner says President Obama wants to push the Republicans into the ash heap of history. President Obama doesn't have to push, the Republicans appear to be able to get there all on their own.

The Republican votes is disgraceful and they should be ashamed of themselves. There are towns along the Jersey Shore where people cannot get back into their homes, or where curfews keep them off the streets and outsiders away because so few homes are inhabitable that no one lives there. Thousands of people in NYC, LI and New Jersey still don't have heat. The damage to infrastructure, homes and buildings was massive.

What really ticks me off the most is that New York and New Jersey are donor states. We send more money in federal taxes to the government than we will ever get back, and we don't complain about it. When disaster strikes any other part of the country, our members of Congress vote for relief. We would like some of our money back to pay for the relief.

The only Republican Senators who voted for the relief bill were from the Gulf states of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, as well as a handful of the only sane Republicans in the Senate. Unbelievably, Sen. Rubio from Florida and Senator Sessions from Alabama, voted no. It will be interesting to see what kind of tune these idiots sing if a hurricane hits Florida or Alabama this year.

At first I thought the bill was killed. whew!
It is certainly a shame those Reps voted no. Hopefully they will be ousted soon.

To be honest this bill was probably loaded with a bunch of crap not related to Sandy. So them voting against it isn't about lack of compassion, but Instead trying to be realistic, if such a thing even even exists in Washington anymore. I'd have sit down read it and see if it's the same one from last month that was split and see what kind of pork was loaded in the bill. Hard to read on my phone. :/

So basically, what you're saying is, "I am sure they had good reason". Well, I am sure they didn't, but my guess is as good as yours, so if you find some evidence of it, please share.

As it stands, reasons don't much matter. It is still a major fail publicity-wise.

That's Washington for you. They live in their own world where the laws they pass don't affect them. So they can vote however they want. Not everyone there is a parasitic leech, but I'm sure most are. you can tell a politician is lying because their lips are moving.

And evidence means nothing if someone isn't willing to see it for what it is. Just saying in general.

They don't have a good reason. It's a nice attempt to defend partisan politics, but it falls far short. People often attack these bills for having too much pork, but that's definitely not the case. The republicans are lying and trying to play their usual stupid political games, even after being whipped in the elections. It's not loaded with a bunch of crap. Nice try.

Perhaps what you're saying is more true of Republicans than of Democrats since they don't have to go back and worry as much about their constituents voting for them again no matter how many good spending bills they vote against. There are obviously still plenty of Republicans who think that as long as the Republican Congress is doing its best to block absolutely anything whatsoever from Obama, they're doing a basically good job at being Republican lawmakers.

Democrats as a general statement to me seem like they're frequently hopping around on various issues and we certainly almost never have lockstep votes... you have the bluedogs breaking off on this and Democrats from the midwest or the south breaking off from the party on the assault ban because these Dems all ultimately have to answer to their constituents in order to keep their seat. There are things that can cost Republicans their seats but it seems like it has to be its own special extremity of the crazy. Like saying raped women can engage auto-destruct on their rape baby and so there's no need for rape considerations in law.

I'm still astounded by the rape commentary from last cycle. My grandmother had the perfect saying. Put your mind in gear before you put your mouth in motion. Why they thought it was good to say stuff like that I don't know. Politicians are a special kind of stupid.

And no, I was speaking about all politicians as one. I don't care what party you are with, stupid, corruption and greed run rampant on both sides. Buts it's all perception. I see one thing as unnecessary you think it's needed or vice versa. That's life.

Dems answered for their vote on health care in 2010, just as Republicans answered for what they did in 2006.

Will this be their Waterloo? Will they lose the House in 2014? Remind voters of this in 18 months.

Who knows but I doubt it. Doom and gloom with glee all you want, both parties have come back from the bottom and will keep doing so until a new viable platform rises up and kills them both off for good . I just know I'm tired of the crap coming out of Washington.

And what's the new "viable" platform? Don't tell me the libertarian party... lol. The democrats are looking pretty good right now, especially after the election.

My grandma (that I just made up) had a saying too... when people show you their true colors, believe them. I think those people really believed what they were saying, or they believed that saying it would reward them politically and in the elections, so in the end it doesn't matter which one. Just as bad.

    Lol...

Anyways, and that's the sad part, either way you look at it, that people think like that. There are a lot of crazy people out there and I swear they are all politicians.

That's your perception. I seem to think that the democrats aren't looking too good. But each to their own. Nah, I think eventually we will get a new party. Maybe another 50 years or so of bickering back and forth.

The main reason that the GOP didn't lose as badly as they did in 2012 is because when the Democrats got clobbered in 2010, it was also a census year so the GOP got carte blanche on redrawing the maps which basically screwed over the Democrats for 10 years. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it is an uphill battle to overcome that.

Is that so? The democrats seem to have an upswing in registrations, excellent recruitment on the ground and a coherent grassroots system. The opinion the democrats aren't looking too good is based on fallacy... may I refer you back to November? And what will this new party be? Full of crackpot libertarians?

    They have.

Congressional aid after Katrina was immediate, unanimous in the Senate, and nearly so in the House.

58 House members who were present then and voted for it, voted against aid to victims of Sandy.

Given the right wing fiscal ideology of libertarians, I highly doubt that of Democrats.

LOLLLLL!!! What defections from the democrats? To the libertarians? The libertarians aren't the ones who are going to make a big entrance. It's actually going to be the Green Party. Time to focus on the environment, and not be slaves to big business.

Either way, I do predict the rise of a Green Party but they'll be closely aligned with the democrats anyways! The libertarian party is just those republicans who don't want to be part of the republican party... and in essence a bunch of right wing crackpots.

I liked Bill Maher's characterization of Republicans who have sex and smoke pot. It's pretty apt for most I've ever met. But there's 23894397539585 flavors of libertarianism with everyone having their own personal definition so anything you say about the label en masse, any Libertarian will take exception to.
