Hollande himself paid a visit to Timbuktu and was greeted by overjoyed citizens throughout the city. Thousands upon thousands of civilians cheered him as if he was a national hero.

One newspaper describes him as a "rock star" in Mali and specifically Timbuktu itself, where he visited local tribal elders.
I think Hollande can be given some credit for helping save these manuscripts from further destruction when French troops parachuted into the city.
