    Have you ever gone hunting?

    Have you ever gone hunting?
If so, what have you hunted?
How did you kill the animal?
Why did you kill the animal? For sport?
What did you do with the dead animal?

Me, I've never gone hunting and would never even consider it. I don't understand how people can find sport in hunting. If you do, then please explain it to me.

Naah - it's no fun shooting at something that can't shoot back.

Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day.
Give a man religion, and he'll starve praying for a fish.

I come from a family of hunters. I think hunters enjoy the killing. That is the sport part of hunting, I guess.
However, they do eat what they kill. So that is the practical side of hunting.
If you are a meat eater, you play a role in the killing. Someone had to kill your dinner.

I used to go on "drives" with my family when they hunted deer. That means we would walk through the woods in a sort of line to drive deer out into the open where someone shot them. I never actually shot at a deer or wanted to.
On a dare from my brother, I did shoot a partridge out of a tree. He bet me that I couldn't it, but I did and then felt awful afterwards. I just don't think I have the killer instinct in me. But I do eat meat. I let others do the killing for me.
Everyone wants to be heard. No one wants to listen.

My Grandpop offered to take me on one of his Hunting trips but I never went. And I know he hunted for the meat to eat, not just for sport to say he killed the animal for fun. Myself, I don't think I could ever pull a trigger on an animal.

yes, growing up in South Dakota, its the thing to do. My uncle has his own bait and taxidermy store so every year, I would go to his place for xmas and see all the fox, mink. raccoon, fish that he had mounted on the walls. My dad took me trapping as a kid, but i hated it. Shot my first gun at 11. Its just part of the culture here. I never really caught on to it, as I got old enough I quit going, much to the dismay of my father. Im his only son, so Im sure it was a bit of a disappointment to have a gay son that hates hunting.

    Have you ever gone hunting?
    Yes.

If so, what have you hunted?
    Deer.

How did you kill the animal?
Technically, I didn't - my cousin did. I wasn't afraid to kill the deer. I was afraid to fuck up a good shot.

Why did you kill the animal? For sport?
For sport, for food. It seems disingenuous to be a meat-eater and not accept this as part of the meat-eating process. Raising chickens in tiny cages and feeding them hormones hardly seems more humane than shooting a deer.

What did you do with the dead animal?
Took it back home, started the butchering process. I didn't do much of that either.

I don’t mean to pick on you, but I always get a kick out of vegetarians who think that no animals were/are injured in the process of growing their meals.

If the States brought back the American Bison there’d be no wheat fields, and, of course, the battle with gofers, deer, coyotes, birds, rats, etc. is an ongoing process in crop growing.

LOL! You're right, it is SO MUCH more sporting to buy your meat from the grocery store, where the animal probably lived a terrible life in captivity, got fed and injected with all sorts of drugs, and then electrocuted to death in an assembly line!

My meat, on the other hand, lived a happy life in the woods until I shot it, and died a quick, clean death. I know where it has been and what kind of shit has not been injected into it.

Don’t forget how these animals come to be. Thousands of pigs and cows are tied down and fist-raped every day so city folks can eat at hotdog stands and burger joints – and toss half eaten sandwiches (meat/animals) into the trash.

Once. When i was younger i went with a cousin and i ended up trying to save the rabbit.

A lot of guilt, horrible thoughts and recurring nightmares later, I think i'm over it.

Still, nothing i would ever care to see again. That evil, cruelness. I hated him for a long time.

I do enjoy shooting guns, bows, slingshots, etc. It's all about being able to hit a target, and understanding the workings of the weapon. It takes practice, and a certain bit of natural skill, in order to be good at it.

As for guns, I've fired black power, cap and ball, and cartridge weapons from various caliber rifles, shotguns, and hand guns, and from single shot, to pump, and revolvers, and semi-automatics.

That said, hitting a stationary target is quite different from hitting a moving one.

As for hunting, the only things I've gone after are small game, and mainly birds. I've been dove hunting in the South, and pheasant, and duck, hunting in the North. And, all that I've killed have proven to be quite delicious (when cooked properly).

I am not a gun owner, nor would I want any in my home. However, I do have friends that have gun collections, and are also serious hunters, including everything up to bears!

One has an amazing collection of stuffed trophies, which are a tribute to the wonder, and beauty, of the animals themselves. He's also a dedicated, and quite accomplished, fisherman which is an entirely different kind of hunting.

And, it's not just about food, or trophies, but also the Adventure of You vs. Nature, and the stories/experiences to be accumulated tromping through the woods, slogging through the fields, or floating on the water.

I personally don't hunt and don't think I would ever want to. I don't have anything against other people who hunt, for food or sport. Just don't think I would enjoy going out in the woods, spending all day up in a tree or whatever .
I may be bad, but I'm perfectly good at it.

Please keep in mind that the massive quantity of grain and wheat used to feed cattle and pigs could basically eliminate worldwide starvation if it were given to people instead. The polution and waste of resources that exists because of the beef industry is staggering.

In case it isn't obvious from the last paragraph, no, I've never gone hunting, never will and am a vegetarian.

amusing thought perhaps . Idea of hunting as sport-entertainment rather than as a source of food there really should be vegetarian hunters who eat not a single thing .

I've tried to have an intelligent conversation with a fox-hunter and also a target-shooter.

I get the impression that the main attraction is the same as golf— it's an excuse to get out the house, leave the wife and enjoy the fresh countryside air with your mates.

I doubt that many hunters would see or draw any such line between ‘food hunting’ and ‘sport hunting’.

Most sporting goods stores sell guns and hunting licenses, and in most places, outside of larger cities, perhaps, most gun shops have a name such as ‘Something/Someone’s Sports Den’ or the likes.

One way or the other, you have to admit, this topic always makes for a good ol’ JUB Finger-wagging Invitational.

Being quite practical nutritionally meat is I would suggest no longer necessary in our diet and it could be that the many requisite co-conditions make it simply impractical . A piece of meat producing x calories can only be the product of many thousand times that number in plant calories . A very expensive equation . ( So hunting or fishing would be profitable and meat-farming would not ) .

I hunted for many years. Mostly upland game. Dove, grouse, quail, pheasant and ducks. I killed them with either a 12 or 20 gauge shotgun. Later that evening or the next day we'd have a great meal. It didn't give me this huge thrill to kill an animal but it didn't bother me either. Of course I tried to make the kill with 1 shot and as quick as possible. It was great to spend time with my dad, brothers and friends. The worst part was having to get up at 5 a.m.

I also think that I would be able to shoot a deer. However, with the latter, I can't even begin to imagine the PATIENCE that is takes - just sitting in one place for hours, or days...making no noise at all, no radio, no conversations, no nothing...the idea of becoming nothing but a rock for days doesn't appeal at all.

How did you kill the animal? Probably would use a rifle but I'm not at all trained (and it won't happen). Fishing - just the traditional methods.

Why did you kill the animal? For sport? I wouldn't kill anything that I didn't want to eat. Whether it's a two point buck or an eleven point buck, doesn't matter.

What did you do with the dead animal? When I caught a couple walleye, and other times I've fished - and YES I've always considered fishing and hunting to be equivalent - it was dressed/cleaned by a friend, or my Dad. I don't really know how to do it correctly, and I'd be even more clueless with something like a deer.

Me, I've never gone hunting and would never even consider it. I don't understand how people can find sport in hunting. If you do, then please explain it to me.
No, no sport in it for me - though there IS some sort of primeval satisfaction to "finding" your own food. But that can also be something like the shitload of blackberries I found along Columbia Avenue in Portland during the JUB meet a couple years ago, that is "found food" as much as a deer or a raccoon...and NO preparation required.

Happiness is subjective, but you are almost certainly right that your killing of the meat was far more humane than the "average" industrial-style methods that exist (not to mention the brutality in the way meat animals are raised). I don't remember the name of the film but it was a rather long "short film" (maybe 40 minutes?) about industrial meat farming, maybe 20 years ago, and the part when some guy was BEATING screaming little pigs, and almost certainly breaking bones, was so vile that I almost threw up right then and there. In my memory, that was the most visceral reaction I have ever had to anything I've ever seen on any kind of video.

OK, in fairness, I'll say that I can probably claim this ONLY because I've adamantly refused to watch things such as "One Man One Jar," or the beheadings videos, snuff films, etc. (But the MODS here on JUB don't have that exemption; they have to evaluate every link that is posted in here. One of the reasons I'll never be a MOD here despite my fondness of this place.)

Yes, true - I don't remember having any kind of wild game that I didn't like. I was particularly surprised when I found out how delicious raccoon is. By the way, are you aware that I think it's **TODAY** that they're having a raccoon roast in Delafield at the VFW Hall or one of those type places? I know it was an ongoing annual thing that started even before I was born, and it was the last Saturday in January when I went to it three years ago. Worth the trip out there.

Yes, FISHING = HUNTING, I've been saying that for years. I've always found it a paradox that I know people who willfully go fishing, but when deer hunting is mentioned, it's "Oh, THAT? No, I could absolutely not, EVER, kill a deer." It really is the same thing, except the fish aren't as "cute" LOL.

There is something to be said, too, about the fact that hunting is, by definition, something that generally takes place in nature's wilderness.

Yes, secondmonkey presented THREE reasons why hunting is a great option compared to meat farming (though, of course, entirely unsustainable with our enormous appetite for meat, busy lives, etc.):

    1. The meat is almost certainly killed in a more (or FAR more) humane way. Apparently the killing methods for meat that is certified as kosher or halal are particularly brutal.

    2. The meat is probably "cleaner" as it will be raised on what the wild animal NATURALLY eats. There won't be any of those damned antibiotics in it, either.

    3. the animal has probably lived a relatively "normal" life for its species, rather than the torturous ways that meat is raised in factories. (Yes, they ARE factories.)

I've never gone hunting and probably never will...I like my Animals to already be Dead, Plucked, Chopped and sealed tight inside plastic wrap ready for a Pan of Wesson Oil.....

I was over to a relatives house a while back and tried Deer sausage that a Hunter/Killer gave her..It was odd tasting and not something I'd eat again....

You don't need to belong to an "upper class set"; most of those who go hunting are farmers and ordinary country people. I can only remember meeting one hereditary peer. I rode with the Atherstone when I was younger and with the York and Ainsty North more recently. Only a few times and on borrowed horses.

Squirrels. 20 gauge shotgun #6 birdshot.

I was steeped in the culture at the time, but would not hunt now.

    ^ Fried squirrel is delicious.

Did you season them with Old Bay?

Believe it or not, I used to have a cat that liked to go squirrel hunting with me. I’d pick off a smaller red squirrel for her to pounce on while I looked for larger gray squirrels for the table.

    I used a ‘22’ with hollow-points.
