Rhode Island should have had marriage equality a long time ago. IMO,it's just another reason why doing it state by state is a stupid idea. Paiva-Weed almost singlehandly held up marriage equality (she had a little help) in Rhode Island until she was backed into a corner.
It will be worse in other states where there won't be that pressure.

Here is a summary of where we stand right now and what will happen by 2016:

Four states are in legislative debate now with final passage that can come at any time.
New Jersey is in limbo, but some think they will override Christie's veto this summer.
California will probably be rid of Prop 8 in June.
Hawaii is the only one left where debate has not started, but likely to start next year.
New Mexico will have a court battle over Santa Fe's proposal to issue marriages.
Oregon will repeal its amendment in 2014.
Nevada and Colorado will do so in 2016, possibly also Michigan and Ohio.

That gets us to 20-22 states in the next three years. After that it's really just red state amendment repeals by citizen initiative.
I know in Ohio they are debating whether to get a bill out next year but I would really wait until 2016. There is still still enough resistance there that in an off year, putting it on would be a bad idea.

I think Freedom to Marry Ohio will wait for one more poll, and if it isn't good, then they will not submit the signatures. They have until July 3 to make a decision. I'm with you though; I think 2016 will be the best shot. It's a presidential election year when the most youth turn out, and it will give Ohioans another three years to change their minds.
Agreed..and also..if Portman gets primaried based on his support of same sex marriage,I think it will make the push to repeal it that much stronger.

Rhode Island has approved marriage equality with a final House vote of 58-16!

Governor Lincoln Chafee announced yesterday that he would sign the bill at the Rhode Island State House at 5:45 pm today. The law will take effect beginning August 1.

^ It is a total fucking shame. But I know that he is totally pumped and excited by another state joining the modern and civilized club of western nations and states that have struck a blow against institutionalized homophobia.

Almost nothing gives me greater pleasure than to know that the evangelical hate mongers will taste the sour and bitter grapes of defeat again and again...as long as SCOTUS doesn't fuck it all up.

Sad to say but I don't think MN will be having marriage equality this year. Just because the ban was struck down, doesn't mean the state is ready for marriage equality.
Democrats gained control for the first time since 1990..and some of them come from districts that voted for this bill. They aren't going to give up control after gaining it.
Sad to say but I think we jumped the gun in MN. Wish it weren't that way..but it is.

The Democrats LOST control of both chambers of the legislature for the first time in decades in 2010. Our legislature is the most progressive one we've had in the last 20 years.

We would not have undertaken this effort if we didn't know we couldn't do it. I can assure you that right now we are within striking distance. The vote is likely to happen this week as a matter of fact.

I would love to be wrong. The thought of it happening in Crazy Eyes Michelle's backyard will be great.
