Actually, we have a study that shows half of people on these apps bareback. That doesn't mean they are necessarily irresponsible, let alone "ridiculously" so. Though I'm sure many of them are.

Barebacking with a stranger someone meets via a phone app is not ridiculously irresponsible?

What more would they have to do to be ridiculously irresponsible in your assessment?

Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

It is a term invented by epidemiologists to deal with all the men who say "Yeah I like to get fucked by guys every weekend, but I'm not gay, I'm straight." Rather than argue with them or try to break through their delusions, they just went with MSM.

This is partly incorrect, or at least reductive... there is obviously that aspect to consider but it is not only that.
MSM means means just what it stands for... Bisexual mens who have an active sexual life with men are MSM, not gay.
In my understanding and use of the acronym, you will find gay virgins, but MSM need to have an active sexual life to get the label.

I am gay because I am exclusively attracted to bed, but I will need to actually take it to the bedroom to become MSM.

Most of the guys I hook up with through Grindr are people I know and have talked to for a while. I have a good sense of who they are before I ever meet them. And I still play safe.

I know a lot of people who only hook up with a small circle of people they know and trust. Not saying it's responsible to bareback even under these circumstances, but it is far from "ridiculously irresponsible".

You got it right. MSM is a neutral, none political term that researchers use cause they have no time to argue about 12 different labels that gay guys like to assign to each subgroup as if it makes a difference. To researchers it doesn't make a difference if you're a bisexual married to a biological female with 5 kids who fucks bareback gay men in skirts and wigs, or a gay club queen that has never seen vagina in his life that odes the same with men.

I never understood this rationale of "I fuck my friends bareback because I know them." Do STDs not infect people that know each other through circles of friends? And if you "know" people in person why would you need to contact them through Grindr and such? I know many guys through various gay social events and hanged out with them at their house parties etc and have them on my FB and have their cell numbers, but just because I know their names, what they do for careers, cracked jokes with while drinking beer and seen their mothers around, doesn't mean I trust my health to bareback with them because God knows what they do behind closed doors that they never talk about. I've seen irresponsible behavior and unnecessary risk taking by guys who do not appear on the surface to be wild boys.

I am not saying it's right to bareback in those circumstances. I don't do it. Just saying, there is a world of difference between that and "omg, fucking anyone I see bareback".

Also, just because you see some dark mark of shame associated with hook up apps, doesn't mean everyone else should. To me Grindr is a perfectly legit means of communication that I use to chat with friends I've never had sex with, nor plan to have any. Just because you think once you know someone, you should avoid the app like the plague, means nothing to me frankly.

This is not about discussing what's shameful and not. No one is saying that online hooking up is a shameful, disgusting way of life. I would say that the level of barebacking that goes on after guys meet in clubs is probably on the same scale. It's easier to gather data through online survey than having some researcher take questions from bunch of drunk guys in a loud bars. Sorry, if you use Grindr as your gay version of Twitter or FaceBook than good for you, but I'm sure most friends don't chat up on Grindr to discuss their work week and Beyonce's lip-sync controversy.

Yep. One significant thing I've learned over time is that you can never really know what a person has done (or does) sexually in their life, no matter how wholesome that person seems to be. If you ask someone about their sex life, more often than not they will only tell you what's convenient for them to let you know.

Your out of focus sarcasm aside, I talk to people mostly on the medium I met them at. Unlike places like Scruff, Hornet or the app versions of Manhunt, Asshole4Asshole and the like, Grindr is NOT a hook up app by design. It's a networking app USED primarily - but not exclusively - for hooking up. There are a lot of guys who hang on there simply to meet other gay people, make friends, maybe find a date, etc., who are not just not specifically looking for casual sex, but will stop talking to you and block you if you suggest it to them. I have made a number of very good friends on there, and since we all go online, it stands to reason that that's where we'd be chatting. For those that I've become Facebook friends with, we use FB chat as well, and with some, I also text. But it is very difficult to maintain consistent contact with someone you don't see regularly in real life. So when someone pops up online, that reminds you of them and you initiate contact. Whether that "online" will be FB chat, Skype or Grindr makes absolutely no difference to me, and your attempts at degrading one means of communication over another is frankly showing mostly ignorance.

This whole argument of "once you know each other, you can email and text" is something I encounter often, and among the clearest signs of someone who knows little to nothing of making and maintaining an online contact with others. It's also why I laugh at boys who have "Looking for a reason to delete this" in their Grindr profiles, as if the single goal of being online is to find a boyfriend... I have been in two relationships since finding Grindr, and I've never deleted it. Luckily, both times the guys were mature enough not to expect it of me either.
