My boyfriend and I got our second kitten last week and unfortunately the poor guy isn't doing that well. They were going to put him down at the shelter (at only 2.5 months of age) due to overcrowding and we thought that's just cruel and adopted him. We've called him Moogle. He's an absolute cuddle monster and loves nothing more than to crawl into one's lap or join someone in bed and snuggle while purring away. He's also comically clumsy for a kitten and we playfully call him a fat hamster. He sometimes head bumps people so hard he falls over.
Moogle was doing okay last week at his initial vet checkup and was due for his initial vaccination next week, but yesterday we noticed Moogle walking around rather slowly and with a limp.
We initially suspected that our 3.5 month old kitten, Oreo, who we got last month had maybe played a bit too rough with him, causing the strained leg. Oreo is bigger, heavier, and stronger than Moogle. But we were wrong. Oreo wasn't at fault here.
We took Moogle to the vet today and we realized the poor guy dropped weight in the week that he's been here, down to 0.9 kilograms over his initial 1.1 kilograms last week. He has a high fever and the limping is something like a joint pain that comes with the fever. The vet said that they can change the limp from one day to another depending on where they feel pain. So it isn't Oreo injuring him, it's the fever causing him arthritis-like pain.
Moogle was given an injection at the vet's clinic and has been placed on a whole bunch of antibiotics. 3 tablets, and 2 liquid form medicine. He's also been given eye drops and an easily digestible, high energy food that hopefully he will like (he enjoyed it at the clinic) and we can mix some of the medicine into.
We really hope Moogle gets better soon. As I type this Moogle is curled up in my lap with a raging fever I can easily feel just by touching him. He's purring and trying to rest.
Oreo meanwhile is playing and up to his usual business, but he and Moogle bonded really fast and he's missing Moogle's playtime company. He will occasionally come over to my chair, put his front paws on the arm rest and peek at Moogle and give a little meow, as if asking him to come and play with him.
Just thought I'd share. I feel bad for the little Moogle
Thanks for reading.
