....it was a small "personal-size" Bakelite vacuum tube AM Emerson with a little light on the dial.
On clear fall nights, around 11 PM, I could pick up radio stations from all over the East Coast (even one from out West - Del Rio, Texas!). The stations would fade in and out, requiring constant adjustment of the tuner and volume control. Now and then I could get 5 minutes or so before having re-tune. I had a long-wire antenna stretched out to a tree outside my bedroom window (which one day would be hit by lightning, ending the radio's lifetime).
What I enjoyed most were the DJ's in the big and/or "hip" cities that played the "new" rock and roll music - the originals, not the popular covers. Some of the DJ's were George "Hound Dog" Lorenz (WKBW Buffalo), Arnie "WooWoo" Ginsburg (WMEX Boston), and Alan "Moondog' Freed (WINS New York).
I thought how great it would be if scientists could find away to broadcast radio frequencies over telephone lines and then AM radio from all cities could be heard with a special tuner of some sort connectedto the home telephone.. Then I would not have to suffer fade-outs and station drift, and such.
Why am I posting on Tech Talk? Well....today we have this ability, right on the PC. Though there are many ways to find and listen to internet radio stations and regular radio stations that stream over the net, the most complete and useful I have found is RadioSure which at this moment offers a choice of 23,193 stations worldwide. Now and then I find one not connecting, but usually not. You can search by station name, location, genre, and language. You can bookmark favorites. You can also RECORD any stream and you can configure to crossfade between stations, normalize volume, split recordings by track, and change skins.
The application is free, but during installation, you will be asked to install a toolbar (and since you are not likely to want to, I recommend you uncheck the toolbar installation choice) and it will ask you to agree to Terms of Service for a "coupon manager" or such (and since I don't believe you will want that either, simply "DECLINE" the Terms of Service agreement). RadioSure will install anyway. The last possible issue when installing is that the setup will ask you if you want to install RadioSure in a drive for a "portable device". Since I wanted RadioSure to install on my main computer (with a standard "uninstall" path), I declined the portable installation.
Once installed, there are a few free skins you can download.
I use this quick-starting, never-stalling or rebuffering, program all the time and find beautiful music for any mood, as well as old time radio shows, comedy shows, talk shows, and such. Even a station that plays nothing but Sinatra.
