youtuber with good points on mass shootings / gun control

I think he makes really good points. Not trying to start any fights, just was wondering what everyone's thoughts are.

My apologies, I wasn't being a dick, I meant it just as a suggestion if you're very interested in the topic. Personally I'm just kinda tired of it but it dominates CE&P right now.

Hey. I listened to at least half of it with no other distractions.

He is a persuasive speaker, but his syllogisms are faulty. Whereas he cites the argument for needing positive actions recognized, he also presumes gun carrying equates to protection as opposed to simply proliferation of gun violence.

At work this week, one of my team (who somehow believes I am anti-Obama and pro-gun) informed me how the Second Amendment was expressly to permit us to have military weapons in order to overthrow the government as necessary. Whereas I don't argue that it was not so, I do argue that it is no longer relevant. In truth, no citizens, group or state can overthrow the government any more. The constitution never envisioned modern arsenals. It envisioned hand to hand combat.

What is more is that I argue the whole protection and safety talk is total bunk. I have lived 51 years, and I don't know anyone who pulled a weapon on a criminal and protected his family. I know people who have threatened other people in an altercation, but that wasn't self defense.

So, I don't buy the argument that we NEED armed protection, as I've never known anyone who was protected by active brandishing of arms. It is a placebo, and the resort of people who are easily made afraid of a changing world.

Does seem to be the common social trend here to focus on individual arming and arming various groups with the very significant complete omission of any reference to the police . Suggest Canada and perhaps other countries this would be entirely a police matter , any personal element ( the NRA ) really wouldn't enter into it . Any discussion would be of more heavily arming the police . ( And quite practically a trained policeman with a working recently-cleaned loaded gun is probably much more likely to hit something than me ) .

The whole carrying a gun for protection theory is crap. If more people carry guns then even more people will carry guns. This means that a gun will be pulled at the slightest provocation.
Look at an unarmed society like (mainly) UK. Whenever there is an altercation, like in a bar, then fists are throwing punches. If they were armed then guns would be pulled and people would die. As it is a couple of drunks need soem A&E treatment for cuts.

The idea of young children going to school with armed security, metal detectors, locked turnstiles is horrendous. All of these kind of security options come at a price, I think it's important what kind of environment children learn in.

I think the only way this could work would be to have an actual police officer stationed in every school. You just can't have half trained security guards or teachers who have been on a 1 week course walking around schools carrying guns like John Wayne.

You also can't have any armed personnel interacting with the students, an armed security guard can't be disciplining the children. They would be there to patrol the grounds and only react in life or death situations.

The truth is, the police will almost never be in the right place at the right time and be able to prevent this sort of outburst as long as arms are so prolific.

Even a child could observe a cop's routine at a school, and either time an attack during a gossip/donut/flirtation break, or simply kill the cop first. How hard could it be? These guys are adept at meticulously planning their attacks, reloading their guns, etc.

The truth is an armed public is not a safer public, only a public that thinks they might have a chance to go out blazing.

If arming everyone were truly a remedy or deterrent to crime, then Texas would trail the nation, and its prisons are as full as California's.

Yes, i agree with Benjoe, well said.

I've got a little too excitable about responding, and am now engaged in a youtube debate over a related video. I should learn not to respond to youtube videos.

Gun control is a joke. What difference will it make? The damage has already been done. That being said, bad the guns, I don't have one, I won't have one (I think they are stupid).
