Oprah the next president? Why it's not so improbable...

    Paraphrased Excerpt:

She created a billion dollar media enterprise over a span of 25 years, with one of the most successful television shows in the history of mankind. Her following crossed racial, gender, and economic lines, and she's rated among the top 9 greatest Americans by some polls."

    Excerpts:

"With that kind of influence anything is possible for Queen of Television."

"Coveted as the 'most influential woman' in the world, Oprah certainly has the money, the friends, and the 100% name recognition among likely voters."

"Certainly, with her very large media empire, her amassed fortune, and with the color barrier now shattered, the office of the presidency does not appear far off."

"She has what no other candidate could truly muster – a real sense of emotional connection with over a billion people. Of course, she also has the money, the media savvy and, well, now the time."

    She's a black woman.

It's going to be another 20 years or so, I think, before such a thing will be possible.

Na, a lot of people will vote for her.

Sarah Palin vs. Oprah ? That would be fun to watch.

Although Sarah is pretty naive, she's smart enough to realize that she wouldn't stand a chance against Oprah.

I would vote for O in a sec but we all know she won't run and has no intention. She gets more done on her own and she doesn't have to deal with spoiled grown ass men to do so. And least we forget she isn't married to Stedman so the bible beaters will go after her for that.

You have to remember that as racist as the US people is, they still voted for the black guy instead of the white woman who everybody supposedly loves when it came to the Dem primaries. Even if Hilary has a fighting chance NOW, to combine the two would not work yet, I think.

Why not? After all, if a community organizer with no executive experience was considered qualified enough to become president, then I guess Oprah can be considered qualified for the job too!

    If Oprah becomes a president,
it will be good for the US but not so good for her. She would be vilified harshly by some people.

Because the American people is barely ready to vote for a woman president, let alone a black woman president. I think an openly gay man has more chance than her...

For those who don't follow politics (most people), the race for president is about likeability, charisma, appearance, excitability, and identity. Oprah has all of them.

Why not? She would get leaders of other countries to open up about their feelings, throw fabulous state dinners and ensure the White House is decorated well. Besides, with all her money she can pay off the debt with one check.

Every study indicated that even if she'd won the primary she would have been incapable on the present data of carrying the national election, though. I heard a few people saying stuff when Obama's re-election looked "close/tight/in danger" that "if Hillary had been President this wouldn't have been a problem", but based off the data I saw, Hillary would have never had a first term. Not in 2008 anyway.

What "studies" were those??? All the right elements were in place for a democrat to win the presidency in the 2008, and especially because the unpopular incumbent president just happened to be a republican. In fact, that's primarily why Obama (and not McCain) won the election.

Re: Oprah the next president? Why it's not so improbable...

As far as Obama vs Hilary, his win had nothing to do with her gender. It came down to a lying contest, and he was simply a much better liar than she was, telling the American sheep exactly what they wanted to hear. In regards to race, I think voters are now color blind when it comes to qualified candidates in presidential elections. And even if the nation isn't ready for a female president, it's very likely they'd be willing to make an exception for Oprah, because of the reasons outlined in the article.

RE: "but we all know she won't run and has no intention"

Since when do the politically savvy JUBbers in this forum believe anything a potential candidate "says?" And not having an "intention" to run is meaningless. Because it's entirely possible she could be motivated to run by influential friends, if she has a lot of respect for their opinions. As peer pressure can have a powerful effect on people, and it's doubtful Oprah is immune to it.

The studies at the time of near the end of the Democratic primary that year. Again, those may not have accurately foretold whether or not she could carry nationally-- Obama won by a bigger margin than I think anyone suspected prior to the last week or so before the election. But no study at the time indicated she could carry nationally even assuming she secured the candidacy.

I'm sorry that I don't have links or names onhand, but it was well discussed at the time in news & radio.

LOL, who said it did? You seem to have skipped over the part about her being "the most influential woman in the world," and rated among the top 9 greatest Americans by some polls, with 100% name recognition among likely voters. And most importantly, "she has what no other candidate could truly muster – a real sense of emotional connection with over a billion people."

Bush junior didn't have any of that, yet he won two terms in office despite being a bumbling idiot. And Oprah is worlds apart from that greedy, corrupt fool.

I love Oprah but I can't picture her leading the country in war and handling terrorism.

God forbid the US elects a president who does not start a war.

I'm sorry that I don't have links or names onhand, but it was well discussed at the time in news & radio.
Um, dude - any study that tried to forecast the 2008 election before the financial market meltdown is bunk anyway.

Hillary would have laid the smackdown on McCain. The Republicans were DOA once the markets went to shit and everyone realized what a dipshit Palin was.

That's quite possibly true. But she tested a lot more poorly with the national electorate than Obama did, at that time.

2016 is not 2008, for one people realize that having something other than a white man isn't going to make the country blow up, and we've had women run for Vice-President on serious tickets now. I'm not saying she couldn't win an election, but I'm saying in 2008 the numbers looked pretty bad as far as people's willingness to vote for a female President, even compared to a black Presidential candidate.

This is purely anecdotal, but I've come across people who: 1. were Hillary supporters who defected to the Rethugs for rejecting Hillary, or 2. wanted a female president and thus gravitated to the McCain/Palin ticket whereas they would have voted for Hillary.

But the bottom line is that the country wanted a change of the guard in 2008 to the point where almost anyone would have won.

Then again, Hilary has earned a LOT of respect in the last four years, and lost none of it with any relevant voting group. And I expect she will only gain more now.
