    Lupus and the Common Cold

Despite having awesome health insurance, I have never been one of those individuals that ran to the doctor's office for every little sniffle, cough, scrape, or bruise. But now after being diagnosed with high lupus, I am at a quandary: I've had congestion, a sore throat, cough, and now wheezing for almost 4 days now. I got my flu "nasal spray" back in September and haven't had the flu since I was 7; with no fever, I still believe I don't have the influenza, and I don't feel it necessary to go in, but my family are more concerned.

I don't mean to sound all gangsta, but lupus is whack! My immune system is all on overdrive attacking healthy cells, so now that I have a cold, do I continue on with my usual diet-cure of extra raw fruits and vegetables and juices or do I try to subdue it? Beh, I'll give my rheumatologist a call in the morning.

Definitely give your rheumatologist a call. I'm not around too often but I wouldn't consult this forum for advice (unless we do have some MD JUBbers) on such a personal topic that's so vital to your health. Out of curiosity, though, why is it called a diet"-cure"; was it recommended by a physician?

Very sorry to hear about your diagnosis; lupus is a nasty bitch. Wishing you the very best and hope this obstacle isn't taking too much a toll on your personal/work life otherwise.

I believe KaraBulut's an MD and he's usually pretty prompt in answering this kind of question. That said, I do agree that your first and best resource is probably your rheumatologist.

It sounds as if the diet you're describing is a modified Gerson diet, correct? I'd be curious to know how that's helped you.

If you've been recently diagnosed, you might want to check out a book on lupus titled "Lupus Novice" by Laura Chester.

Hey, it this all stemmed from my not being able to shake my nasty, common cold. My doc (rheumatologist) only told me not what to take per NSAIDs. When approached about overly healthy Vitamin C diets, he was more than elusive. I traveled over 120 miles for THAT?!! WHAT THE?!!

But on a higher note, he did order not one, not two, but 12 vials of blood (with only 7 being the standard test tube size).
I am saddened that I can't give blood any more, and I am worried about the blood that I have given ... it may be Lupus-tainted.

SLE isn't a reason not to donate blood. It's believed that because the immune component to SLE is specifically a reaction to your own body, it should not cause a reaction to another person's body.

However, since I'm assuming that you've had sex with a man since 1977, you weren't eligible to donate under that archaic exclusion or like most gay men you didn't answer the question on the screening questionnaire?

Doctors aren't trained in nutrition, so they often don't have any answers when asked about it. You can ask him to refer you to a nutritionist or registered dietician who would be able to help you find answers about dietary changes that may help.
