But the religious would argue differently.
I want to hear their views.

Historically, to convert; then later for the Crusades; lately, to cash in.

funny being a complete and thorough atheist and rationalist I have apparently a very different attitude than seems to be expressed here . I can imagine no greater gift to give to anyone that a god that cares about you . Jehovah's Witnesses Mormons Krishna people damn right I woukd be knocking on doors . Truth and meaning and compassion and a reality that cares about you , we all deserve that . An antireligious atheistic counter-prayer . God is a delusion that gives meaning order and intention to the world , the soul and its survival into the afterlife is a delusion that gives hope for the future . I have neither . Have mercy upon me and pity upon my sufferings .

    Occasionally, justice.

    Greek Red Damsel
The worst thing...is not energy depletion, economic collapse, conventional war, or the expansion of totalitarian governments. As terrible as these catastrophes would be for us, they can be repaired in a few generations. The one process now going on that will take millions of years to correct is loss of genetic and species diversity by the destruction of natural habitats. This is the folly our descendants are least likely to forgive us.--e.o. wilson

Religion thinks it's a cure , an atheist thinks it's an anaesthetic .
