Google Chrome appeared on my compuiter

... and now everything is running slow, and system resource use is moving between 60 and 95 percent.

Are these related? and how did Chrome just appear on my machine?

Probably you installed it with some other software. But chrome doesn't use any resources unless you start it. There is a google updater which runs once a day or so from a scheduled task, but that won't make a difference.

An OPTION for CHROME to be your default browser is buried somewhere just about any place you go. Make sure you look for it and decline. Your remedy now is to UNINSTALL it.

    So this is coincidence.

This morning the manager shows only a few percent resource use, but things are still locking up -- I'm borrowing a computer for this while waiting for Firefox to open so I can check settings there.

One thing that bothers me is that my AVG announced that I am out of protection (so I updated immediately ['only' took two hours]), so maybe something slipped in during the interval? I did manage a scan of all the folders I don't recognize, but that turned up nothing.

Scan what? Chrome is no malware. As it has been said - you can uninstall it. But it's even possible that your AV update installed Chrome, many of them come with browser plugins for supposed safe browsing and probably some with a safer browser, too.

Chrome is mediocre at best. I do use Comodo Dragon and while it is a derivative of Chrome it's actually better and far more secure than Chrome itself, also considering Comodo is a internet security firm. Delete Chrome and get this:

Scan for something naughty slowing down my computer. Apparently it isn't chrome, but something is making things so slow that I can start a solitaire game, pour a cup of mocha, grab a cupcake, sit down again to watch the cards being dealt.

In that case I would recommend this software, as well as Iobit Malware Fighter:

I've been doing that. I've gotten processes running down from 101 to 89. At least I seem to be able to answer this now....

If you get automatic downloads or notifications to download the latest updates to Adobe products (flash player, reader, writer) and check yes upload the latest version it will automatically install chrome. The option isn't shown in this case that chrome or other things will be installed unless you watch the actual download install and then you hit cancel.
There are other 3rd party software that will do this as well should it be installed on your machine when updates become available.
As a example When you get a notification pop up that a newer version of flash is available from abode its best to mark "no" don't install and instead go to the website yourself and un check the boxes for programs that will be installed such as McAfee, yahoo toll bars or chrome.

Why is it better than Chrome when it's just a re-packaged Chromium? They claim that is it "far" more secure than Chrome but don't tell you why. The website doesn't list anything specific. The only thing that I could find is that they replaced Google's safe browsing with their own safe-browsing ... not sure if this is really an improvement.

They did list the features. And they are pretty specific. Either way, Chrome has major leaks.

    From their website:

Has privacy enhancements that surpass those in Chromium's technology
Has Domain Validation technology that identifies and segregates superior SSL certificates from inferior ones
Stops cookies and other Web spies
Prevents all Browser download tracking to ensure your privacy

    ^What leaks? Explain?

No they don't list anything specifically.

Has privacy enhancements that surpass those in Chromium's technology
Which ones? How do they surpass standard chromium?

Has Domain Validation technology that identifies and segregates superior SSL certificates from inferior ones
Nothing in the SSL spec does anything like that, how do they make that segregation?

Stops cookies and other Web spies
So do many other Chromium addons.

Prevents all Browser download tracking to ensure your privacy
That doesn't even make sense .. but fwitw you can disable the download history in Chromium, too.

That's all just marketing hogwash without substance.

It's all specific. I don't see the problem with the description and they are a security company. So Nope it's not marketing hogwash. LOL. Silly that they would be using marketing hogwash for something that is free and doesn't cost a cent to the user. Nice try though!

And maybe you should use it... instead of shooting it down and see for yourself. But I guess some wouldn't want to pay the company zero dollars and zero cents for a free browser.

No it's not specific. You (or the company) failed to answer any of my questions. I could just re-compile Chromium, give it a face lift and claim "it's better". People would ask why and I would have to explain. But apparently people are happily turning a blind eye because it's coming from a security company. And free stuff is also marketed, yes, even with lies. .. just in case that you didn't notice before.

I didn't fail at anything. I'm not asking for a confrontation and download it for yourself. Either way, I find myself using IE more these days because Chrome as a whole isn't great. It's not just a face lift. It's an actual security company and I think I'll believe them over someone on an internet forum. There is no "marketing". It's free. Nobody is being charged. So I roll my eyes at that one.

No, you came along and claimed that "it's actually better and far more secure than Chrome itself, also considering Comodo is a internet security firm." But you cannot give any valid reason why it actually is better. And if your reason is "It's free and it's from a security firm", their marketing obviously works because you're blindly trusting what they write without challenging or questioning anything.

Sadly, too many people do it. Critical thinking and knowing the technology that you use seems to be out of fashion today. That's why we have so many security problems in the first place.

I do use critical thinking and I have extensive background in technology. And what seems out of fashion? I gave some valid reasons. No need to be condescending. I am not blindly trusting anything. I actually used their browser and I think it's secure.

And I know computers and technology quite well, having built my own computer and having some secure software on it.

You're just blindly insulting something you haven't used.

Was going to edit.. but by secure software I refer to having both up to date Firewall and Anti-virus apps. Including Avast Pro (w/ Firewall), Advanced System Care and CCleaner.

Try something before rallying against it. IF one doesn't like it uninstall it and stick to whatever browser used before.

So again, with your extensive knowledge of technology - I am sure you can explain me *why* this browser is better than everything else. And don't tell me because it's from a security company and they say so.

For example, how is their domain validation different from the SSL standard? And why better/more secure?

In case you didn't notice, in my first reply I was genuinely interested why you were recommending it. I checked out the website, but there was no useful info to be found there. So I asked you. And you are basically telling me "shut up and try it" - but that won't answer my questions.

I posted a message this morning which apparently never got there.

I ran a Malwarebytes scan and it found nothing. I uninstalled Chrome as well. Windows did a registry repair when I restarted. The number of processes is down to under fifty.

But it's still slow, still freezes up. It acts like something's running that is using most of the CPU time, but Task Manager doesn't show any use level higher than 4%.

    Any ideas?
(arguments about which browser is better don't count)

If any of those things are happening, that should show in usage in the Task Manager, shouldn't they?

It behaves the same whether the wireless is on or disabled. It also behaves the same whether a browser is running or not.

The only thing I can think of is, how many processes do you have running, how big is your hard drive, and how full is it?
When was the last time you deleted TEMP files, cleared Temporary Internet files,... and Defraged?

I leave my desktop PC on 24 hours a day at home, and it bogs down after a while and needs to be rebooted (shut down and started back up) now and then to clear out all the temp memory. My Firefox needs shut down and reopened because of all the surfing I do. Or Perhaps you don't have enough RAM to run everything you're attempting to run?

Depending on what software programs you have installed, a lot of those will check for updates behind the scenes which depending on how frequently they do it can be a pain and a resource hog too.

Depending on what software programs you have installed, a lot of those will check for updates behind the scenes which depending on how frequently they do it can be a pain and a resource hog too.
Processes, as I said, are down to several dozen. Defrag runs automatically every Sunday night. Hard drive is 30 gig and only 38% full. Temp files get killed with every defrag. Temporary internet files get wiped every time I close my browser.

4 gig of RAM. All automatic updates are off.

And it doesn't matter what programs I'm running, the solitaire game is still so slow I can watch the cars being dealt.

Right now the computer is being disassembled for cleaning.

    . . . . and apparently my mom's computer has a sticky 'd' key.

In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

If you don't have 'SuperAntiSpyware' try that too, sometimes it'll get things AVG or MalwareBytes miss.
Also if your internet router keeps logs, take a look through them and see where all your computer is connecting to..

You could always try doing a System Restore using a restore point from the day before it started acting up.

I forgot about SUperAntiSPyware -- thanks.

And I'm thinking of a system restore.

Meanwhile, the dismantling has revealed a spot by the battery that seems to have overheated -- not sure yet if that's significant.
I'm also learning that laptops are a pain in the butt compared to desktops.

Stay away from system restore. I've never seen it work, only cause more problems.

This is one of the reasons I finally gave up on Windows. I used to maintain all of the computers in my office myself, and it was fairly routine for inexplicable problems like this to crop up. You can spend quite a lot of time trying to troubleshoot this. In my own experience, I was seldom successful in tracking down the specific problem. And, I agree with liam. Restore didn't usually work, in my hands.

To save time, I fairly routinely just re-formatted and re-installed Windows. When Microsoft began hassling us with "Windows Genuine Advantage" (Microsoft's program for preventing you from re-installing legitimate licenses of Windows without their permission), I finally gave up on Microsoft, and switched as many computers as I could over to Linux.

The three "Rs" of supporting Windows: Reboot, Reformat, and Re-install.

After a while, I just imaged each of my computer's drive once it was all setup. When it comes time to reinstall (like tonight, windows kept rebooting on shutdown) I take the drive out, into the server it goes and I dd the image back on to it. But, all data is centrally located so I don't have to worry about salvaging data.

After a while operating systems just become slow and eventually need to reinstall it all. My Vista PC had so many issues but I found it a pain to do 7 hours of installing programs just to get it back up to normal. Be thankful you don't have Windows 8 it's a nightmare trying to get things to work on it.

I'm not claiming victory yet, but I'm hopeful. I ran MalwareBytes, and the problem came back; I ran SuperAntiSpyware, the problem came back; I used CCleaner, and the problem came back. So I got bold and ran all three at once.

MalwareBytes caught a pile of hidden little things like tracking cookies, SuperAntiSpyware cornered a pair of trojans, and CCleaner every bit of free space and all the things the other two found. Now Firefox is no longer freezing, my game programs run smoothly, etc.

I'm wondering at this point if what said it was google Chrome really was, because it took three times uninstalling to get rid of it -- the third uninstall was with CCleaner wiping and overwriting as it went.

So I wait to see if the serpent rears its nasty head again.

I had setup Linux on a PC years ago, & have been wanting to try it again for awhile now ... just so happens recently was given a computer free (drive reformatted/no OS or anything, so rather than put Windows on it...Whats a good Linux version as far as ease of instillation/reliability/etc?

Coulda been the trojans..some of that crap is really tough to get rid of
Or maybe some "leftover bits" of Chrome since it wouldn't uninstall cleanly?
I might have to download CCleaner sometime.

Started having some computer issues of my own last night...I think the harddrive on my other computer might be going out, computer was making some weird sounds (mechanical/didn't sound like a fan) & it kept locking up. Once warmed up it was fine (but I immedently ran a backup to grab the last few new files I'd saved or updated since the last one) . Uggg now I may have to get a new drive if I can even find one for that thing..

^72Jay, the version of Linux will depend upon your needs.

For someone completely new to Linux, I see the easiest one as probably Ubuntu Linux. It does have its bugs (like all OSes). In particular, you may have a problem getting your printer to work with it.

If you do a lot of graphics work, or desktop publishing, you might want to look into Ubuntu Studio.

We can identify that new kind on the block as Linux Mint. I don't know much about it, but I see on DistroWatch that it has become the single most popular Linux Distro.

I have several others. Puppy Linux runs lightning fast, and allows the user to consume content very well. You'd find it weak at creating content, though. I also have Mandriva Linux, Tin Hat Linux, and Fedora Linux, OpenSuse Linux, and the Gentoo Linux Installation CD. If you have any questions about any of them, drop me a line.

Aye, I'd say it did. But I guess it's just a matter of how often one uses it. Most people just have an original roll-back from when the OS was installed. If one used it prior to every application install, etc., it may be of some help.

I've had it work. The biggest problem is the little changes I've made to settings and got so used to the regress seemed like it had screwed things up. The only real problem was from jumping back three configurations at once -- it was a mess.

CCleaner is great -- I've had Windows uninstall leave crap behind, but never had a single problem when I use the CCleaner uninstall; it not only tells the files they aren't there any more, it will overwrite them if you want.

I'm going to have to look to see if there have been any reports of nasties masquerading as Chrome.

    <sigh>

Now I'm not sure the problem is gone. It isn't as bad or often, but it keeps freezing.

My next attempt will be help from a friend who happens to have some licensed Win7 copies around.

My other thought is perhaps what bit rate you're operating, and/or if you have indexing turned on? Fat32? Those might affect your speed.
