For those of you who are familiar with NYC.

Do you consider someone who lives in Staten Island dating someone in Queens workable? Meaning is there enough distance between those two boroughs for a relationship to not work?

LOL NYClover54...I have been with my bf since 2005. He lives in US and I in KL. We meet a few times a year. So I think Staten Island and Queens is considered local. Trust each other and work things out if you really love each other.
Btw, my bf and I chat daily via skype and phone. If I can do it so can you. Good luck my friend

If you can afford the VZ bridge toll! Seriously though, it can work with commitment, but it is certainly not convenient driving back and forth several times a week from SI and Queens.

It will work if you both want it to work. And things change. When you both get tired of it you may make different living arrangements. Good luck.

Yea i plan to move to queens after med school any way. It's funny to because we met in college in PA and we were very lucky to live in the same city. And yea its fucking 15$ to go over the VZ. How can the people stand for this? ANd the reason why I asked this is because 25% of NYers said they would not date someone outside of their borough

"Bridge and tunnel" can work. But it's about how serious you are about making it work and what changes you're both willing to make.

Being from Alberta, I just had to laugh! I looked it up on the map, and the two spots aren't even 50 km away. I live in Edmonton and dated a guy from Calgary, and we'd make the drive every weekend (Calgary and Edmonton are about 285 km apart, which in Alberta is considered "Not that far"). The sense of distance depending on where you live is totally different!

it's a definite oddity associated with the NYC area... personally, I generally have a commuting limit of an hour to go see a guy, whether that means an hour in the car driving to see someone in Jersey or spending an hour on the subway getting out to Queens (although, truth be told, I'd probably rather drive 50 miles into Jersey than have to travel 5 miles through NYC)

but to the OP's situation, it's all about how much you want to make it work. does the other guy have a car? just from personal experience, it gets kind of draining when it's always one person traveling to the other with no reciprocation and I know SI isn't necessarily as well-connected with trains/subways as Queens.

But that means that 75% of New Yorkers would make the effort.

Why would you identify with the lazy assed people who can't be bothered to pursue their own happiness even if it virtually is right in front of them.

The fact that you are asking indicates to me that you must not think this guy is actually worth your time.

    So cut him loose.

You're dead wrong. If he wants me to move to Queens, I'll move to Queens. The last year I had with him was one of the best in my life. I just asked this question because I thought it would be interesting to see what other people thought.

For those of you unfamiliar with NYC, but are familiar with Reality TV, Staten Island is sort of across between Mob Wives and Honey Boo Boo. It was our little piece of Appalachia until the Verranzano Narrows Bridge opened and brought in Sicily from Brooklyn. The cast members of Jersey Shore were not from New Jersey. They were all from Staten Island. So, NYCLover54, my advice, GET THE HELL OUT OF STATEN ISLAND!!!!!

Honestly, having been to both places... a nice quiet drive in Alberta vs the Staten Island Ferry transfer to the 1 then transfer to the Q/R, crowded in with a bunch of NYCers in what is probably an hour and a half commute on a good day?

Oy vey. Gimme the Alberta drive.

    Ouch.

Actually, I think only a couple of the guys were from SI, based upon their accents.

The women were from other buroughs. One was from Nassau County. One was from the Bronx. And I think the others were from Jersey. Snooki was the exception- I think she was not from the area.

You should have known the women weren't from SI- their hair wasn't high enough and their nails were not long enough.

Vinney is the only one from SI. And I happen to be one of the Sicilians who moved to SI from Brooklyn When I was 10 though. And Snooki is from Upstate NY

Staten Island ? is that a borough still ?

I love all the responders who don't know NYC well

I live in Queens and I still get times when a Manhattan guy will not "come to Queens" - and it's close - it's a Manhattan is the shit thing

    LOL

staten island is so fucking far and not just far but isolated - the ferry to a bus ...... yech

and you're right those tolls - killer

but if u love each other it doesn't matter

if ur just fucking ....... it does matter

    good luck

Re: For those of you who are familiar with NYC.

I live on Staten Island, and no, queens is not far enough away to be considered long distance. The traffic to drive back and forth can be a pain, but it's not that bad. To all the other posters, Staten Island is not in the middle of nowhere like so many people seem to think.

Then hurry up and get back to Brooklyn. I actually never watched Jersey Shore, so I cannot profess to be an expert. I grew up going to the Jersey Shore, though. I was (mostly) joking about Staten Island. Only Tottenville is like Appalachia.

And Chance is right, Staten Island is remote from the rest of NYC. Some express bus routes into Manhattan go through New Jersey. Tottenville in the southern part of Staten Island is right on Raritan Bay, right by the Driscol Bridge over the Raritan River. That bridge is sort of the unofficial dividing line between North Jersey and the Jersey Shore.

Also, the Staten Island Rapid Transit train is anything but.

LOL...not really - driving here is a nightmare sometimes and Calgary is no exception. If I have some to see who lives in the SW I just cringe especially if I have to deal with anything near rush hour which seems all the time. But then again I live in the country. New York would just be a matter of getting transport I would think?
