Boy dressed as giant chicken has feathers ruffled during KFC protest

An animal rights campaigner claims he was forced to abandon a protest outside KFC after he was punched, rugby tackled and pelted with poultry - while dressed as a giant chicken.

Determined Olly Tyler arrived at his local branch dressed in a bespoke £600 costume and planned to wave a placard outside for two days in a bid to deter customers.

But within hours his feathers were ruffled when diners began hurling sachets of sauce, chicken wings and nuggets at him.

He claims the final straw came when one diner punched him in the head and two men jumped from their car and rugby tackled him to the ground.

Now up until this point I was CONVINCED this story was from the United States and probably from somewhere like Alabama or that kind of region, but then I read on....

Olly, 16, who did not suffer any injuries thanks to his 7ft tall chicken suit, was so shaken he has vowed not to return to the KFC in Trowbridge, Wiltshire.

I mean, if this is going to happen in the U.K. then I'd be guessing maybe Manchester or Liverpool or Glasgow, but.... Wiltshire???? Seriously????

The place is the epitome of a polite and restrained and vaguely upper-middle-class kind of semi-rural southern English county - the LAST place in the world I'd ever expect to see belching fat moronic KFC addicts with anger issues.

I bought Mary Berry's cookbook some while ago for ten quid. I looked it up on the computer this week to see how much it was at amazon, and, beside the price was the customer rating - only 2 stars with over 350 responses. That seemed odd, so I began to read the reviews, just over 100 reviews had 3 stars to 5 stars, but another 250 of them were 1 star, and the reason for the one star was that the book contained one recipe for shark steak with salsa. The anti-shark-hunting lobby were out in force, of those 250 protest reviews, they were all posted on 11th December 2012 or round abouts. A mention one of the posts said there was a facebook page devoted to outing those who were using, promoting, catching, selling shark produces. Amongst them was shark's fin soup. Activists were posting a name and shame list of restaurants up and down britain who had shark's fin on their menu.

In a 2006 article from the New York Times [1], prices for shark's fin was already very high, $700 ( £430 ) per kilo, and that figure is likely to have become higher since. The stopsharkfinning.net website [2] says a bowl of shark's fin soup "can easily cost upwards of £62 per bowl". With the staggaringly high cost of a bowl of soup, one wonders if the some establishments actually seels the real McCoy. That is, has anyone actually gone beyond seeing it in a menu to testing whether the stuff is real shark's fin cartilage or not, and by that, how many people know what real shark fin actually is when they eat it?

There is a cheaper alternative which is a vegetarian mock shark's fin. It costs around £60 per kilo [3]. Visually, the cooked vegetarian fin strands is hard to tell from genuine shark's fin strands. It cooks without dissolving, like the real fin. Its transparent strands are similar in colour when inspected individually. However, it is only in the eating of it that a diner would know whether the strands that are served in the shark's fin soup is real or not. Genuine shark's fin has a crunch when bitten on, the vegetarian stuff does not having a soft almost gelatinous texture.

For businesses to stay in business, they do need to look at the expenses and overheads. Kilo for kilo then, the cheaper vegetarian option would be more attractive for restaurants to use in their everyday menu. Naming establishments just on the inspection of a menu by a well intentioned conservation minded individual, rather than actually knowing if a vegetarian mock shark's fin was being served and looking at the price per bowl seems to be a ham-fisted attempt at vigilantism, and at worst, slander, for which the establishment would properly have the legal right of redress with those who accuse it.

-not saying that the kid does this because i don't know and i hope not. it's kind of scary to see how some of the animal and plant protesters have so much compassion about the treatment of dogs, cats, horses, chickens and etc BUT can't show the same type of emotion towards their fellow human beings who might be going through the same thing. they could stand up for a cow to the slaughterhouse, which is good because those cows can't defend themselves, give funds to donate to save that cow BUT yet if they saw a guy or woman who was homeless and had nothing to eat starving to death, they would look the other way.

Not to speak for groups I don't belong to, but I believe their attitude on that would be that humans have tons of human advocacy groups looking out for them, whereas animals don't have a voice. I believe that's a strong part of their belief, anyway.

can't knock them for doing that though. it's scary to see how those animals get treated though simply because they can't defend themselves. they have as much right as we do when it comes to life and being treated right.

even though i love to eat chicken (really hypocritical), those chickens didn't ask to come into the world. actually feel a bit guilty though eating those chickens, pigs, and cows thinking about it though. would become a vegetarian for the sake of those animals but i can't though.
