My laptop constantly shuts off and restarts for no reason

Is there a virus on my laptop? It randomly shuts off for no reason and restarts itself. And it's been doing that for days. Should I download or buy a virus removal program?

Could be a variety of things. Perhaps hard-drive or operating system corruption, a virus...

Would need more information. Do you have a Windows disc (if your system is indeed Windows based)? Perhaps a fresh reinstall of the OS could be in order. The worse possibility could be hard-drive failure... and that would result in having to buy a new hard-drive. From your description, I don't think it is. Sounds more like the OS could be corrupted. But then again, it could also be a virus.

And when does it restart? Like immediately? Or does it take a while?

Could be overheating as well. Take a can of air and blow out the heatsink/fans.

The thermal paste between the heat sink and CPU may have completely dried up and is no longer effective causing it to overheat and shut down. That means taking apart the laptop, cleaning off the old thermal paste and then applying new paste like Arctic Silver or IC Diamond for example.

If the temperature is really the issue one can check the temperatures in the BIOS... or use this software:

Does it really shut down (like when you shut down it manually) or does it just black out and reboot?

Cotton, I have a low-tech idea for you to consider.

You do have cats, don't you? If so, cat hair might be clogging the vents, causing your puter to overheat.

No joke. This happened to one of my Cableboxes once. When I removed the cat hair, the problem completely disappeared.

It could be a overheat problem. When was the last time you serviced your laptop? I usually service them at least once a year. I use my desktop more often these days, but back then my laptop also had the same problem. Later on I sent it to the service center, and they told me there are a lot of dust clogged in the ventilation.

It restarts a few seconds after shutting down.

Come to think of it, the screen sometimes the computer freezes and the screen blacks out or there are varying shades of grey slashed across the screen, like the technicolored bars you see at the beginning of programs in old tvs. This happens infrequently.

I've never serviced my laptop. It's relatively new, about a year old. I'm going to look into getting it serviced.

Windows 7? Well perhaps a reinstall if you do have issues.

Since it is a pretty new laptop, do you have a warranty on it? Either way, taking it to a repair shop could be an option. Avoid Bestbuy though. Those mom and pop repair shops tend to be better.

No, I don't have a warranty on it. I'm thinking about taking the laptop to one of those private repairmen.

Check the reviews on any repairshop before going.

And it does reset/reboot just right after that? That would point towards a heat problem (as already mentioned by others) or to a problem with your graphic cards drivers. Try installing the latest drivers for your graphics card. If this (and any heat checks) don't help, your graphics card might be broken.
