    Capitalism or Socialism?

    Just for fun

If you had to choose between your country being pure capitalist or pure socialist... which one would you choose?

Keep in mind that very few if any countries are pure capitalist or socialist, most are somewhere on the spectrum between the two. In this poll the "somewhere between" isn't an option, you have to pick either one

Yeah same but also welfare in general.

I'd probably be begging on the streets, doing crimes or dead if I lived in a pure capitalist society. So I'll admit I have some self-interest in my view on this.

I'm quite happy living in a society which is in the middle between those two... but if I'd be forced to pick it would rather be socialism.

capitalism is an effective tool that harnesses human tendencies to want more, however we have also seen the horrible terror that capitalism has wrought on the world.

there is more common interest in socialism, you would still need a monetary system to discourage anti-social corporations from growing too strong.

an example of this is Boeing, that provides a valued product and pays no taxes, effectively a state-owned corporation.

in contrast to content manufacturers that create no real-world value and are effectively anti-social corporations like comcast and telecom monopolies that create no benefit to the society they exist in.

    It's not a fair question.

You cannot possibly have "pure" capitalism. Public streets? Socialism! A public police force? Socialism! A national postal service? Socialism! A common currency? Socialism!

    Etc. etc. etc.

    Sure it is.

I've met plenty of far right people who think all those things should be privatized.

Agreed but for different reasons. Can foresee a topic like this being flamed and/or trolled. Hope that isn't the case though.

thinking that there is a third way politically that we are constantly in danger of falling into . Authoritarianism . Not right left in that the most extreme instances recently would be Tony Blair UK Labour and George Bush US , both very left and very right but very alike . Historically I would say Stalin and Hitler both the furthest left and the furthest right . And the police now have tv cameras all over London . Can you say Big Brother ?

    Re: Capitalism or Socialism?

Even I, coming from a Socialist country originally, would go with socialism. No, it's not the ultimate answer, but it's better that the rampant and unsustainable system that's Capitalism. It's great for a select few and the rest can just go fuck themselves. It's self-destructive and anyone that thinks this system can sustain itself much longer is delusional.

At least in a socialist society I don't have to make the decision between going bankrupt if I need health care or dying because I don't want to cost my family everything they own. I may not like it, but I will be assured work, a purpose, and a place to live. Oddly enough, crime was also very low (at the time) where I came from.

No system is perfect, but with all it's negatives, socialism is STILL better for the population at large than capitalism. My god, I never thought I'd form those words.... but after living in America long enough I have seen and lived first hand the damage this system causes. Capitalism is only good for "the select few". The rest of us only live in the illusion of freedom. But think about it for a while... we are slaves to the banks, etc. We live in a system that works against the common man at every step of the way. We struggle, are up to our ears in debt, all with the false promise that each of us can make it big.

Is there a better way? Not as long as greed and war is our biggest motivator.

people call me a lefty. and I never new why because I am right handed. i guess because i care too much.

a mix of both is the best.

you need a bit of socialism to help the most unfortunate in society and provide basic needs to the citizens but you need capitalism to bring structure to that society.

Neither. I'd live on my own island and be self sufficient.

Acrtually the two extremes are Capitalism and Communism. Socialism falls somewhere in the middle of the two.

    Re: Capitalism or Socialism?

Why not follow a hybridized system, like the once strong Social and Christian Democrat that still have a presence in Western Europe? They presented the advantages of Capitalism (competitiveness, diversification and capital incentives for generation of wealth through trade and a tightly regulated financial system), with effective progressive taxation policies, very well developed public services with an emphasis on education and health, subventions and assistance of all kinds for the poor and emphasizing worker's rights. When Social Democracy and Christian Democracy were at their strongest and they freely applied Keynesian economics, unprecedented growth occurred, Europe paid its debts to the US and all the citizenship's quality of life rose exponentially.

The fact that these movements have gradually turned toward Monetarism and radical Conservatism doesn't mean that they were not effective int he past, or couldn't be again.

Pure Socialism is a misnomer. That would in fact be Communism.

Based purely on theory and understanding that neither exists in it's pure form, I'd go with capitalism. Just cause I'm a selfish bastard.

We don't have to look at theoretical "pure forms" of both to see which is better overall. All I know is that most innovations that transformed mankind in modern times occurred in capitalist resembling economies. The only thing "socialism" was good at is providing the feeling of a basic safety net while greatly stifling overall human progress.
