'20 Female Senators Sworn in on Capitol Hill'‏

On Thursday, January 3, 2013, the brand-new 113th Congress began.

In the U.S. Senate, there is now a record of 20 female representatives. These ladies are: Alaska's Lisa Murkowski; California's Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer; Louisiana's Mary Landrieu; Maine's Susan Collins; Maryland's Barbara Mikulski; Michigan's Debbie Stabenow; Minnesota's Amy Klobuchar; Missouri's Claire McCaskill; New Hampshire's Jeanne Shaheen and Kelly Ayotte; New York's Kirsten Gillibrand; North Carolina's Kay Hagan; and Washington's Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell. New members are: Hawaii's Mazie Hirono; Massachusetts' Elizabeth Warren; Nebraska's Deb Fischer; North Dakota's Heidi Heitkamp; and Wisconsin's Tammy Baldwin.

In last year's elections, Warren unseated Scott Brown for the seat which was previously held by Ted Kennedy. Fischer was also a pickup for her party, after the seat was vacated by then-retiring Ben Nelson.

Mikulski is the longest-tenured woman in either house of Congress. (Now at age 76, Mikulski was first elected in 1986.)

On ABC News' broadcast, Diane Sawyer sat down with these female Senators for a discussion that is on video for approximately five mintues. It's pretty interesting.

This is a good thing. When you balance the gender of government, you will fundamentally change how it operates for the better. Male dominated government of privilege can do tremendous damage to a government.

I am proud of my female senator, Maria Cantwell. I have a lot of respect for that woman.

Thank you for the video. That was fun to watch.

...and one of those twenty is gay!

The first openly-gay Senator in American history.

Elizabeth Warren will make a big impact, hopefully.
Good luck to Tammy Baldwin too.

New Hampshire made history effective with the 2012 elections. All key state and federal offices are now held by women. The first state in the nation to achieve this.

    Governor • Maggie Hassan [2012]
    U.S. Senate • Jeanne Shaheen [2008]
    U.S. Senate • Kelly Ayotte [2010]
    N.H. #01 • Carol Shea–Porter [2012; pickup and returned]
    N.H. #02 • Ann Kuster [2012; pickup]

Interesting to watch...have they shown part two yet?

I have supported Barbara Boxer for years now...most times she has run without any serious competition but last time against Carly Fiorina I ended up donating money to her weekly. Her campaign knew how to get the $$$$...I was cracking up because I knew they were manipulating me and I was happy about it. They sent me photos of Sarah Palin alongside Fiorina and instant fear overcame me and I hit the DONATE NOW button within 10 seconds.

Re: '20 Female Senators Sworn in on Capitol Hill'‏

It's interesting to see this, given an article I read several years ago which asserted two things about having women in government: that governments with a high number of women involved spend more per capita, especially on social programs; and that governments with a high number of women suffer less from factional blocking of getting things done.
We could certainly use a dose of the latter.

And on that notion, it's too bad we don't have a hundred women in the House.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "
