The American Dream is in peril...

I agree, but for different reasons:

John Boehner re-elected as speaker of the House

The Ohio congressman has come under fire from conservatives in recent weeks for supporting a "fiscal cliff" deal with President Barack Obama that allowed tax rates to increase. He allowed a vote on a package brokered by Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and Vice President Joe Biden that most House Republicans opposed. The bill passed Tuesday with the support of Democrats.

Several northeastern Republicans loudly criticized Boehner for stalling a $60 billion relief bill for states hit by Superstorm Sandy. Boehner has pledged to hold a vote on Sandy relief on Friday.
    In my personal opinion?

The newly re-elected Speaker of the House isn't a "leader" he's a Pussy!

He makes Obama look like a REAL leader, and a Super Hero to the American working class.

With Eric Cantor as the Public Relations Consultant, and I can only hope that the House GOP is able to maintain enough "self-respect" to keep the Tea Party nut jobs from sinking the entire GOP tickets during the 2014 Mid-Terms.

Or...most likely showing themselves so inept, that they'll make the Tea Party candidates look "rational" by comparison.

Why would you not want them sunk in 2014?

Your post is curious. It is almost internally inconsistent.

As an American I'd like a viable (realistic) opposition party in 2016, instead of a group of knee jerk reactionaries leading that party.

    Seriously.

Isn't there anyone here who's tired of the Democrats winning elections by default?

It's like the DNC doesn't even have to really try to win elections anymore.

How bad was the 8 years under G.W. Bush?

American elected their first African-American President, over a Woman!

From the composition of the present House I would hesitate to say the opposition is dead, or that they won by default.

The country is stressfully divided. The impasse in Congress reflects that. The NE Repubs are in decline and the new power Repubs are at a loss on what or how to do what they want.

For readers who may not understand this thread’s title, I note that Speaker Boehner’s first speech to the 113th Congress included the following statement:

The American Dream is in peril so long as its namesake is weighed down by this anchor of debt. Break its hold, and we begin to set our economy free. [CNN Transcripts]

    I would disagree.

The first priority of the GOP, and this has little to do with Geography, is to REMAIN in power WHATEVER THE COSTS.

Party First, everyone, and everything else second.

I just think that it would be nice to have some *cough* leadership within that party that could be counted on to (at the minimum) provide some consistency (or heaven FORBID; LEADERSHIP), instead of cow towing to the fringe elements within their own party to maintain power.

Leadership is dong the right thing when nobody is watching. To call any congressional GOP person a leader is fallacious at best as they can't even do the right thing when everyone is watching.

Re: The American Dream is in peril...

What would be a breathe of fresh air would be BOTH parties making decisions that are in the best long term interest of the United States and her people.

So far i only see democratic leaders doing that type of legislating yet they still pander. I think we would get the opposite end of the spectrum type of mistakes if we had a Dem senate and House with a Dem President. We have seen what republicans whipsawing our government into two wars and not paying the bills does to the economy and our future outlook. I know plenty on here would say "it cant be as bad as xyz..." But consider the pork democratic and republican legislators installed into the Sandy Relief bill that had nothing to do with Sandy and you can grasp the problem.

We need balance. But balance with two sane and rational adults on the opposite sides. We have lacked that for most of my adult life. I don't have too much faith it is going to get better.
Everyone can be great, because everyone can serve.
    ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
