I see tough love as pointless in a situation where I can't, as a close friend or relative, actually put the person in my car and drive them to getting help. If you're giving "tough love" over the internet it's just a euphemism for being mean imo. Tough love isn't about just giving someone a rough and negative analysis of themselves and walking away. It involves follow up and an intent to do whatever it takes to make the help happen the way it needs to.

When someone comes here open about their problem, and their need for help, and their acknowledgment of needing that help, and talks about their plan and appointments to get that help, showing support isn't "burying your head in the sand." It's showing support. None of us are in any position to effect any real-life influence on whether or not someone gets help or improves. It's all we can do here. Tough love here is just "I'm gonna be negative."

I would consider some of my posts to Refuji to have been some variant of "tough love" but the truth is I can't control where he goes with any of it-- so harping on him nonstop about anything is just being mean and it's not productive.

I think a happy medium between the two is best.

Ashy was taking time off earlier, and I believe he just popped back on long enough to let everyone know he was (for the most part) doing ok and still alive - and probably to stop me from spam posting his FB letting him know people here were worried about him.

Ashy would tell you that a few years ago, no one was as hard on his ass as I was....and you know what I mean so get your heads out of the gutter.

I have made it clear to him that no matter how we sometimes slide...he is always safe and welcome here...everyone only wants the best for him because he has been an inspiration to so many.

I think everyone sees what a good, kind, clever and very human person that he is.

I don't think that illgetbi did any harm in his response...but he may have made Dante realize that it was time to get serious about coming back to an optimal state of health.

I love them both like brothers oddly enough and I won't hear anything bad about either of them. They are as imperfect as I am...so I enjoy their company.
