I think there is no reason to believe calling something "a cultural thing" should insulate it from comparison or criticism.

Some caution is warranted when comparisons or criticisms of cultural things takes on the character of bigotry.

In this thread, I don't find the idea of messiness, awkwardness or difficulty biased. Let 'er rip.

But the notion of backwardness ("it's the year 2013") is questionable.

There is such a beautiful variety of rice in Asia. This just isn't good enough.

This isn't uniquely an Indian phenomenon. I have many esian friends, mostly from west of china, all the way to Saudi arabia who eat like that. I'm not going to lie, it doesn't bother me, because when I invite them for dinner, it's much easier to do the dishes! I found it a little weird how long one of my friends went without washing her hands after eating though. We were watching a movie, then about 2/3 the way through she finally washed them.

LOL it's funny you say that because I always rolled my eyes at the guys you bump into around the net here and there who say things like they only jerk off with a condom on, or they wait to finish until they're standing over a toilet bowl or trash can for "cleanliness." I wonder if they feel the way about hand-strokers who finish on their stomach the way OP does about eating with hands.

P.S. Cultural side note... the reason that Chinese food comes the way it usually does (i.e. any meat and vegetables in it cut into small easily liftable pieces with chop sticks) is from a really old Confucian teaching that it was uncivilized to have any implements used to butcher or cut meat at the dining table. Knives, etc. That was actually considered far more filthy/less classy than the issues in this thread, to old Asian cultural beliefs. So seeing fancy westerners in suits eating expensive steaks in restaurants with knives and forks would be as abhorrent as eating with hands are to someone who thinks eating without utensils is dirty/messy.

I'm Indian from South Africa...and eat with my hand, so does almost every Indian I know. It's part of our culture. It's actually kinda odd when an Indian does eat with cutlery in an Indian home . In most restaurant it's with cutlery as everyone else.

I saw some show once with an Indian wedding and they were rolling rice and something else I guess into a ball and eating it with their hands. It's their custom it's fine with me. We eat burgers and pizza with out hands. Once I knew this woman who grew up in Spain and she said she didn't eat any food with her hands.
