Indian Woman Dies After Being Gang Raped

I think that this young woman needs to be respected.

I am horrified by this case. This woman is my age. It makes me physically ill and seriously angry.

The woman, whose intestines were removed because of injuries caused by a metal rod used during the rape, has not been identified. She was flown to Singapore on Wednesday night after undergoing three abdominal operations at a local hospital. She had also suffered a major brain injury, cardiac arrest and infections of the lungs and abdomen. “She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds, but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome,”

These men are animals. I want this to shed light on sexual assault in India and around the world. Delhi says that they will now begin to create a national registry for rapists.

This article also tells the story of an 18 year old woman that was raped last month by two men. She has killed herself due to humiliation and police negligence. The police and elders of her community werent interested in convicting or even registering the men for the crime. They were trying to negoiate some sort of deal with the men and the young woman.

This is why even when I start doubting the efficacy of the death penalty, in cases like this I have no qualms about putting those who have destroyed a life so senselessly to a quick end. A young woman is dead because of a culture that so devalues their worth. Well it's time that society fights back to defend and promote the human rights of these women to live their lives for themselves, and not as the possession of men to do with as they please.

These reports about the gang rapes are just...My heart goes out to the victims. It is encouraging to see so many brave women and men speaking up and fighting for justice. I hope this ushers in some much needed reforms to protect the victims and punish the creeps who think they can just continue to get away with this barbaric behavior, hoping that everyone will look the other way.

Apparently, the President of India's son did not appreciate the women protesting and called them middle-aged, caked in make-up and out of touch with reality. He referred to them as "painted and dented" going from the "discos to the protests"-- I guess he is implying that they're loose? Anyway, he has been forced to apologize by his family, including his sister. Wtf was he thinking? Ugh.

The government inaction and the severity of this attack shows how there needs to be serious changes made in that society. The court system is notoriously, disgustingly slow when it comes to sex crimes. I hope the family gets justice... but no amount of punishment can bring their family member back. I'm utterly horrified and those comments by the son of the Indian President better have some political fall out.

I've been so glad to see the outrage on the streets over this. Sexual harassment (abuse, rape) has been one of India's shames for a long time now. It's no secret, and no smallish problem. There will no doubt be many who throw their hands up in the air asking, "but what can we do?" (Which reminds me of a certain attitude we Americans are currently evidencing.)

Hopefully, we're seeing an end to the idea that a few fingerwagging billboards are going to address the issue.

The newspapers are reporting that inmates in the prison where the rapists are held are taking action. They had beaten the leader (?) of that group and apparently force-fed human feces to the gang. Good job. I am usually never for the death penalty but these assholes need to die.

The only reason why she was flown to my country for treatment was to soften the blow that the Indian government is going to feel from the public. Even at her deathbed she is used politically. I doubt the protests are going to change anything. People often blame the impotent government and police force but true corruption lies in their society which worships men and see women as a commodity.

Despite the issue taking place in somewhere foreign, it is a very global one. Many rape victims are blamed for the crimes inflicted on them. If I am not wrong there was a rape case in the US where the victim got blamed. A 11 year girl was gang-raped. Victim-blaming is just disgusting.

Ugh. Yes, I remember that story. And the lawyer of the rapists was saying that the little girl was like "a spider luring a fly into its web."

Often, in discussions about rape or sexual harassment, victim-blaming is usually always involved either intentionally or unintentionally. Rape is condemned but it is seen by many as just another thing men do when "they can't help themselves" and then the subject almost always turns to what the victim could have done to take precautions, if they were partly to blame for eliciting lust or drawing attention to themselves. It's just disgusting. It's why so many women subconsciously have what is referred to as a "“rape schedule”: the ways in which women alter their daily lives in order to limit their chances of sexual assault.

Anyway, I feel awful for the young woman in the first BBC video you posted, describing being groped on the bus and how it was the worst experience of her life and that it made her feel numb. That happens everywhere in the world, it makes me so angry. In so many parts of the world, women face so much street harassment in public transportation and aggressive cat-calling when just going about their day it's sickening.

I learned recently that in India it is referred to lightly as "Eve Teasing." There was some tumblr post discussing it that I came across a while back and yes it is basically victim-blaming dressed up in cutesy language. And when someone is "eve teased" they are expected to ignore it rather than draw attention and shame to themselves. It's just really sad.

True, but it is not unique to them. Pretty much every culture/society throughout history has at one point or another treated women as a commodity and valued men more than women or viewed women as inferior beings. Women and men need to fight for progress everywhere to ensure that these sorts of abuses are stopped. Just as there has been progress in many countries with regard to women's rights and human rights in general, I believe the same will hold true for India as well. These demonstration are a step in the right direction.

It's like what happened in Pakistan with Malala Yousafzai and the other school girls who were targeted by the Taliban. People in many of these countries are starting to speak up more and organize to bring these issues to light. It is a good sign.

I'm sorry to hear that, it sounds creepy as fuck. And, true, it doesn't even really matter how you look or how attractive you are. It's just a way to dehumanize, that's part of the thrill for people who do stuff like this to people in public. Like, my first experience with street-harassment was in my teens. I was walking home after getting of a bus, and I walked by this group of construction workers who were working to build some more residential homes. I was dressed in a hoodie and jeans, nothing special (that's why those "appropriate dress" arguments are total bullshit ). Then all of a sudden they're saying inappropriate things and leering. Just very unsettling. Thankfully, where I live, it isn't as extreme but it's an issue everywhere.

Yes, I've heard, too, that it is very widespread in Japan, it's a serious problem. Unfortunately, it's inspired an entire genre of porn called "chikan"...Along with other genres involving getting upskirt shots of women in public, etc. It's popular in the West as well. If you see some of the stuff, it's like the line between what's real and what's fantasy is so blurred because it goes for "realism." I'm sure this encourages some men to go out there and try it themselves because it's often portrayed as harmless fun.
