I've never been to a bathhouse, but I have been to a nude/clothing-optional beach - Haulover Park in Miami, FL. The atmosphere there was very relaxed; I saw many body types, from male to female, in-shape and out-of-shape, young to old. It really isn't about the sex or showing off, but more for being comfortable in your own skin and around others who are comfortable in their own skin, but you do also get an opportunity to show off, in a non-sexual way, if that's what you want to go there to do.
