The Ohio congressman's days as House speaker could be numbered -- and Tea Partyers appear to be keeping count

When members of Congress vote next month to determine who shall lead the House, odds are increasingly dim for House Speaker John Boehner’s hold on power.

Since the failure of his Plan B proposal for extending the Bush-era tax cuts for all but the riches Americans — those with an annual income of $1 million or more — pundits and pols have been raising the spectre of a new speaker of the House come the next Congress. The pundits, for once, appear to be onto something.

Not surprised at all, he is pretty much the biggest goof ball to be Speaker since Gingrich.

The problem isn't Boehner. Why do you think Cantor was smiling ear to ear after the failed plan B vote? he knew that was a potential death knell for Boehner.

I am afraid at this point Boehner has missed his chance to make a coalition of Republicans and Democrats which is the only way the congress gets anything accomplished with a Dem Senate and a Dem President. Boehner was much more able to be worked with before he was hamstrung by the Tea Party. However, Cantor is the Tea party and will lock out government for another two years. i wish we could vote no confidence in our government and start over. Of course after this last decade it would look like Japan where they have had nine prime Ministers in ten years.

Slate explains it briefly:

The Constitution gives the House of Representatives the right to "chuse their speaker" but doesn't specify a procedure. This means every session of the House must first decide how to choose a Speaker before it can actually choose one.

Traditionally, Congress has adopted the following procedure (proposed by Thomas Jefferson). First, the party caucuses each vote to select a candidate. Second, the entire House votes on the two nominees. Since House members invariably vote along party lines in these elections, the majority candidate always wins. Thus the really important election is the nomination vote within the majority caucus. And House rules do not require that a nominee be a member of Congress.

So, theoretically, they could pick Gingrich.

That Cantor wants it shows the low level of his intelligence. The idea that the Tea Party really being in charge of the Republicans in the House is going to let them get anything done is ludicrous -- the only reason they've gotten anything done at all is Boehner. Whoever steps up to make the Tea Party officially in charge has to see that the only thing they'll achieve is making the Tea Party despised.

Ousting Boehner just as he is transitioning to reason is the worst thing to do.

Israel experienced this when Ariel Sharon went into a coma. Just before, he was transitioning from right wing extremism to centrism. Now we are back to an intractable right wing government in Israel.

If we do not have learned men in government who learn from history, we are lost.

If Boehner wants a place in history, he'd better be breaking ground by hammering out an agreement with enough Democrats to join holding the Speakership. Were he really creative, he'd work out a joint or alternating speakership with a Democrat.

I just thought of this. How many Reps in the House don't know that little item? You are more learned than a lot in there.
