Hammar's dad is waiting by the border for official word - it is expected that he will be home for Christmas

according to the judge who released Hammar, the case violated the Mexican Constitution

sorta flies in the face of the some of the anti Hammar crowd here on JUB who seemed somewhat happy with the Marine's incarceration

The court ruling came as a bit of a surprise. Mexico’s ambassador to the United States, Arturo Sarukhan, penned a letter this week saying Hammar had been rightly arrested in August for the “federal crime” of carrying a shotgun “restricted for the exclusive use of the Mexican Armed Forces.”

Weird... that was part of the outrage but apparently while in communication with prison officials and working through the issue he was moved to a safer location that happened to not be a cell.

The problem that the more rational thinkers of JUB had was your insistence that Obama was "ignoring" him and that it was his job to free him. No matter how many times we tried to explain that not only was Obama not aware of Hammar's predicament and this was a job for an Ambassador, you just kept repeating your "You guys keep worshiping Obama!" nonsense.

Obama is not perfect, and he's not immune to criticism. However, try to criticize him on things that are relevant to his job. You don't get angry at the plumber for not doing something when your AC or TV breaks, do you? We'll take your critique of him more seriously when you stop whining that the neck tie he wore at a press conference secretly means that he wants to "Kill Whitey".

As for Hammar, none of the articles said he was being harmed or tortured. He was being held while the Mexican legal system handled a matter than happened within their jurisdiction. Mexican jails are shitty, and the US can't do a thing about it. I'm sorry he was in that shithole for some time, but it's been resolved, and hopefully next time he will make sure of another country's laws before he visits there.

Exactly bankside and fury of firestorm. I am glad a man who served his country is back home. But the fact remains he broke a law,and no matter what we think of that country(and Mexico has a LOT of problems) insulting them and demanding the country release him right away isn't how things are done.
More to the point,I'd be willing to give more kudos to Faux News and Bill O'Reilly if it was coming out of the goodness of their hearts. They didn't give a crap about this marine as much as they cared about using him to bash Obama.

Hammar showed the gun to US Customs and they told him it was OK to take it into Mexico. When he crossed the border, the first thing he did was show the gun to Mexican customs and asked them if it was OK .... he was immediately arrested and put into prison.

This is the part of the story that some people just gloss over. He wasn't hiding the gun or trying to evade the authorities.

I have absolutely no interest in the guy whatsoever. He broke the law and got arrested for it, then they released him. The "whatever" was for your forced show of patriotism. And the guy's life matters as much as any others, but he is alive and well, and the only reason we are talking about him is because a bunch of prissy queens wanted to USE him to bash on their own democratically elected president.

Just a quick note on diplomatic protocols, an Ambassador is accredited as the direct personal representative of a foreign head of state. Thus when an Ambassador does his job, it is the head of state getting things done.
