What is your opinion on the Diary of Anne Frank?

I read it when I was 14, and I noticed in several passages that Anne Frank may be bisexual or gay. She says that seeing a girl's figure makes her go into ecstasy and there was a part of the book where she asked a friend if they can feel each other's breasts. Do you think she's bisexual?

Overall, I found her short stories great; I found the diary to be okay. What was your opinion and thoughts on Anne Frank and her diary?

I don't think she was gay or even bisexual. She was at that age where kids her age explore their sexuality and experiment. It's been ages since I read it, but I seem to recall she had the hots for Peter enough that her descriptions made me have the hots for him as well.

I'd completely forgot that I have the book. I should dig it out and give it another read.

Same. To me the diary is like any other book. I hate to say but I cannot relate to her. I have a feeling the pain, suffering and importance of WW2 are lost in this generation. Quite dangerous.

If you'd said "I don't relate to that book but fortunately other literature/experience/documentary/whatever acted like a spark of freedom and gave me insight about the character of a world war and totalitarianism and why children shouldn't have bear that burden; I'm sure others will grow into the same understandings, even if the book isn't as widely read any more. Isn't it great that there are many paths away from war? I'm happy about that" then I'd get it.

But you seem to be saying that this particular book has some kind of key irreplaceable insights without an understanding of which the world becomes ominously more dangerous. I don't know whether The Diary of a Young Girl is the lynchpin to a peaceful future; I rather doubt that any one book could be. Yet to say that it has insights worth knowing, but not worth bothering to get to know…. or am not even getting your point properly, never mind my own...

I can understand it's merits but in terms of teaching young people about the Holocaust and WW2 in an attempt to ensure something like it never happens again (repeating histories and such), I think Night by Elie Wiesel is much more powerful.

I've not read it, only that it has significance because of the Nazi occupation and their treatment of Jews. Ultimately, we know her fate, which makes a poignant tragic example of what war and ideologies can do to people.

She probably had little else to do cooped up in that room. Writing was her escape from her situation, but ironically, she was writing about herself being cooped up.

I wouldn't say she's bisexual. It's just: 1). she's at the age of exploration and understanding of changes and differences between bodies of a small girl and those of women, and 2). [I don't know how to say this well, but] it's actually unexpectedly normal for women to admire each other's bodies, to the extent of feeling each other's breasts, without being labelled as gay or bisexual.

Yes they will. It HAS to be that way. I don't want anyone to be crippled because of me.

Our own age has its own tragedies, why don't we focus on those instead of constatntly bringing the same shit up. It is done, we can't change it.
Why don't we focus all this attention to the disasters in Africa? OR the things that happen in Tibet?

Makes me wonder what sort of amazing contributions she would have made to literature had she survived.
