While refraining from an endorsement of same sex marriage, Gingrich has declared civil marriage equality a 'reality' that momentum favors. This is in contrast to recent remarks stating that gay marriage is a 'temporary aberration.'

What prompted this turn of view? His lesbian sister Candice? His married gay friends in Iowa? This year's elections? Who knows?

But this is a sign that GOP leaders are willing to accept a place for gays in civil marriage, or at least accept the movement's inevitable change on America's legal and social fabric.

What that says to me is that a lot of GOP beliefs are dishonest, and they are kept from declaiming their true beliefs because of party radicals who would defeat them in primaries.

more conservatives, at least those with a practical eye for governing, are moving in the direction of marriage equality. Gingrich did point out a difference between civil marriages licensed and recognized officially by the state vs religious , church based marriages where presumably no denomination would be forced to perform same sex marriages. The practical aspect of having a marriage officially recognized by the state , however, is the most important thing and he's on board with that.

Why would that matter in gay marriages? usually the couple has to be counseled by the minister before the minister will grant them the marriage ceremony. The discretion is the in the clergy to decide if they will perform the duty not required by law. They may discriminate as well... hell in Catholic church you have to take a test to 'convert' if you hope to marry into the cult.

The most important thing is that the anti marriage equality wedge on the right is about to collapse as even steadfast foes
are seeing attitudes rapidly shifting towards support for same sex marriages. People see their gay relatives and friends as individuals they care about who deserve full equality under the law.. they see gay men and women and their loved ones living their lives in love and support and the bigots are increasingly out more and more on the fringes. It's good to see more people in the GOP...even in conservative Democratic communities coming around towards acceptance, even support. Still a ways to go, however....religious die hard rightists won't be swayed so easily as even Gingrich attested.
