    Are you a good typist?

A thread in the tech forum got me thinking. Do you find typing easy? That is, do you really have to look around the keyboard for the right keys or do you pretty much know your way around?

If I only use upper and lower case letters and some punctuation, I can pretty much type with my eyes closed. If I needed an ampersand or an asterix, I'd have to look for them. How about you?

Ordinarily, I'm an excellent typist. I type over 100 words a minute on a Dvorak keyboard, and over 80 a minute on a QWERTY.

However, I do a lot of JUBbing on an iPad, which greatly decreases my speed and accuracy. If I have a longsh post to make, I'll usually save it for when I'm at a computer.

I learned to type in high school and it's stayed with me throughout my life. I use all fingers and both thumbs and Im quite proficient at it. In fact, this IS being typed with my eyes closed. I'll see how it turns out at the end when I open my eyes and check my mistakes. However, I won't correct anything. It is posted aexactly as I typed it.

I have to look at the keyboard and I can't touch-type, but I'm still fairly fast, rattling around with a finger on each hand.

P.S. I hope refuji answers this, because he types the most words of anyone I've ever known on here () and I want to know how long it takes him to make his posts.

Never averaged more than 60 WPM.

I took typing in High School. Was one of only three guys in a full class of girls.

We learned on those big ol' mechanical "Royal" office behemoths, and I got so fast I was always jamming the darned thing!

I'd jamb up electric typewriters, too! And, then IBM came out with the "Selectric" ball typewriters!

Thank Goodness for keyboards, though! Now my problem is the speed of Thought!

I started typing when I was 8, so it's very easy to me. I have to look down at the keyboard if I'm typing a number or looking for a punctuation mark, but other than that I can type blindfolded.

I'm excellent, had to take a computer class twice in high school. The first time around my teacher didn't give me credit because I was always late to class, but I heard he went to jail so it works out.

Average I guess... although I'm sure I type faster when words are not random like in this test... or in my primary language

I need to check the keyboard but I have a general idea of where letters are

hah, I learned on a manual in the 70s; we graduated to IBM Selectrics in second-year typing.
Kyanimal, the young people won't know what we're talking about.

At any rate, on QWERTY I averaged about 62 wpm; on Dvorak, about 67. Not spectacular, but based on what I see in Nishin's comments, that's a lot better than I thought it was. (His link doesn't work for me for some reason. I get Javascript errors.)

KYanimal, I don't think schools focus on typing prowess anymore. They teach just enough keyboarding to use a computer.

It took me a while to get into the swing of it - wasn't sure if I was supposed to be hitting "return" at the end of each line" - and I did go back and correct my mistakes, slowly, because again, I wasn't sure if I was allowed to or supposed to. But I still did pretty good.

Re: Are you a good typist?

So there were two instances where I just blanked out for some reason. I apparently did well o.o

I guess I do better in pressured situations?

When we first got internet, we didn't have instant messaging. Then we switched from I think Juno or Netscape to AOL. That's when I got exposed to IM. My cousin would quickly message me in text speak. I had to get used to the acronyms quickly, and... I was a bit awkward. Should I write in complete sentences? Grammar? Spelling? How is she making all of these pictures with letter and numbers and periods and such?!

So when we would instant message each other, I'd reply. Her replies would be instant. And they'd be like 50 times long. She'd expect an answer right then. After about a week or so being addicted to this, I got used to typing quicker. Then my cousin told me that she actually had a program that helped her -.-

I'm not that great at typing, but with letters I'm usually fine. I'm also fine with punctuation.... for the most part.

HA! I know what you mean! "KIDS" these days!!

Anywho ... back in the 90s, my (fantastic) doctor abdicated his practice because he was really getting into programming immediate medical record transcription. At that time, he said the biggest hurdle to getting his peers to use it was that they didn't know how to type!

My current doctor has more trouble figuring out the programming!

I'm looking forward to taking Nishin's "Test", butt already having a few Brandies under my (expanding) belt, I think it better if I wait 'til "later"!

^KYanimal, I have pondered the fact that, nowadays, a much larger percentage of kids know how to type than the kids in our generation.

Nowadays, learning keyboarding has become a necessity. In the pre-Computer days, only those who had a specific desire to take typing actually did so.

There seems little doubt that typing on a typewriter took more skill, but on the other hand, having to keyboard all day--as many people have to do nowadays--would naturally increase skill.

Some of the results shown on this page have impressed me, especially Lex's. I don't think very many people have the ability to reach that level of accomplishment.

Some years ago, my father approached me with a rather embarrassed request. He wanted a "learn to type" program put on his computer. As he put it, "for all my life, not knowing how to type was considered something of a status symbol, or a point of pride. It meant you had someone - a 'girl' - in your office who did your typing for you. But those days are long past, and I'm getting left pretty far behind because I can't type."

I took typing in high school... wasn't GREAT at it, but did ok.

Where I got really good at typing (for me) was the old AOL chat room days, and attempting to hold 6 different conversations at a time.

My Dad is a retired Preacher, and therefore when writing sermons, and making stencils for mimeographing Church Bulletins (God! I LOVED the smell of that stuff!), needed to use a typewriter, when Mom wasn't available to help him, and/or his secretary wasn't around.

He developed an interesting, though quite effective, style of typing with his two "pointer" fingers.

I found it quite amusing how Fast, and Accurate, he could be just "poking" away!

Funny thing, KY. Absolutely everybody who remembers ditto paper remembers that wonderful smell. Remember that scene in Fast Times at Ridgmont High?

    (Fast forward to 1:45)

I wish somebody would bottle up the smell and sell it as cologne.
