I googled "Nec spe nec metu" and read that Caravaggio's 17th c biographer wrote that he lived by that motto, and that it is believed that he carried a blade engraved with it. I had a brief romance once with a man who had "Ne' con speranza ne' con paura" inked on his calf.

Nah, j/k, I don’t want to confuse anyone here.

Here’s mine (I used to use it as my signature on a different site)…

‘I was ready to die because I was entirely fulfilled, and I was ready to live because I was entirely ready to die. I had never felt less indifferent to life or more indifferent to death. This moment could not have occurred at any other moment, nor could it occur again at any other moment… Time may pass quickly when you’re having fun, but when you’re happy it almost stops.’

Re: Do you have a motto or personal credo you live by?

Here’s another good one. It’s by the genius writer George Saunders who is profiled in this weekend’s The New York Times Magazine – he has a new book of collected short stories, Tenth of December, coming out soon if not actually this next week…

‘Don’t be afraid to be confused. Try to remain permanently confused. Anything is possible. Stay open, forever, so open it hurts, and then open up some more, until the day you die, world without end, amen.’

It’s from the last paragraph of ‘The New Mecca,’ his nonfiction piece about Dubai (originally published in GQ, November 2005), but it also appears in his collection of essays The Braindead Megaphone (published in 2007). It’s very funny.

You could look it up and read it on the WWW if you wanted to…

My personal credo: Don't be afraid to fuck up. It's not a big deal. This is loosely based on something Tallula Bankhead is supposed to have said: "If I had to live my life again, I'd make the same mistakes, only sooner."

Because I was born with a surplus of affect and a healthy imagination, apparently I can be as emotional and dramatic as any 14-year-old. I can also concoct soaring, nebulous, complicated stories in my head about what's really going on that are usually a bit too complicated to fully articulate, and much more so for the listener to comprehend. It doesn't mean they're false or without wisdom - just complicated, like life. As a counterbalance, believe it or not, I often repeat to myself...

    "Don't fuck people over."

    on a serious note.

"One may love a river as soon as one sets eyes
upon it; it may have certain features that fit instantly
with one's concepiton of beauty, or it may
recall the qualities of some other river, well known
and deeply loved. One may feel in the same way an
instant affinity for a man or a woman and know
that here is pleasure and warmth and the foundation
of deep friendship. In either case the full riches
of the discovery are not immediately released -
they cannot be; only knowledge and close experience
can release them. Rivers, I suppose, are not
at all like human beings, but it is still possible to
make apt comparisons, and this is one: understanding,
whether instinctive and immediate or developing
naturally through time or grown by conscious
effort, is a necessary preliminary to love. Understanding
of another human being can never be
complete, but as it grows toward completeness, it
    becomes love almost inevitably."

I recently watched "Bachelorette." I was so taken aback when one girl says to the other "Fuck everyone." That's my motto. It doesn't mean be a bitch to everyone. I have low self-esteem but I work a job where I have to interact with powerful people. "Fuck everyone" means if they are an ass, look at you weird, make you feel awkward; FUCK THEM. If someone's cool, then treat them accordingly. If they are an ass, fuck them.

^For some reason I am enraged over Warhol's improper grammar assuming you quoted him correctly. Fantasy is a noun. It's adjective form is fantastical.

The quote should grammatically read: "Fantastical love is much better than realistic love."

If it wasn't for Warhol's pseudo-intellect heavily fueled by drugs, most of these quotes would be about him ironically.
