Re: Do you have a motto or personal credo you live by?

These quotes by Marilyn Monroe speak to me:

“I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.”

“I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.”

“A wise girl kisses but doesn't love, listens but doesn't believe, and leaves before she is left.”

    And my own personal credo:

Live honestly, deliberately and without regret.

Re: Do you have a motto or personal credo you live by?

Nec spe nec metu, "Neither hope nor fear", the motto of Isabella d'Este, marchioness of Mantua. I believe it was given to her at birth, which I've been told was the custom of the time. If I remember correctly, one sees it inscribed in the frieze of her chapel, or perhaps her study at the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua.
I was once told that the motto of Mary Queen of Scots is "In my beginning is my end". Prescient. T.S. Elliot makes use of it and its opposite "In my end is my beginning" in "Four Quartets".

I googled "Nec spe nec metu" and read that Caravaggio's 17th c biographer wrote that he lived by that motto, and that it is believed that he carried a blade engraved with it. I had a brief romance once with a man who had "Ne' con speranza ne' con paura" inked on his calf.

I have always thought that I would eventually kill myself and I hjave lived life thinking that. So the thought "Ill kill myself eventually" has ironically kept me going. Its not the normal motto but this belief has me still here at 48 when I made the motto (vow) in 1984

In order to live fulfilling life
one must take the positive from the past, present and future

Past: count your blessings, appreciate your roots, cherish good memories you made with people ie: Past Nostalgic
Present: enjoy life ATM, perform your life to your maximum potential (have athlete, entertainer mentality), shake-off negativities/bad mood because being negative prevent you to reap chance. Keep your intuition/sense sharp, maintain your 3 A's gears (Action, Attitude, Attention) ie: Go getter- present. See: planned behavior.
Future: Hopeful, faithful for a betterment..dont stop believin ie: Dreamer, goal oriented.

From those 3's the most powerful one is PRESENT ;-)

Re: Do you have a motto or personal credo you live by?

Here’s another good one. It’s by the genius writer George Saunders who is profiled in this weekend’s The New York Times Magazine – he has a new book of collected short stories, Tenth of December, coming out soon if not actually this next week…

‘Don’t be afraid to be confused. Try to remain permanently confused. Anything is possible. Stay open, forever, so open it hurts, and then open up some more, until the day you die, world without end, amen.’

It’s from the last paragraph of ‘The New Mecca,’ his nonfiction piece about Dubai (originally published in GQ, November 2005), but it also appears in his collection of essays The Braindead Megaphone (published in 2007). It’s very funny.

You could look it up and read it on the WWW if you wanted to…
