In retrospect I think the best job I ever had was while attending tech school and working in a fancy restaurant.

I used to work at a fast food restaurant and had a lot of fun working there. I had a zany female friend/coworker whose antics made the job exciting. Also, I used pass by the kitchen area when no one was looking and stuff my face with french fries, hash browns, bacon, pickles, you name it.

The manager was pretty cool. On the days that we were understaffed, he'd ask me if I could stay an extra hour or two, and he'd give me a free meal for staying.

HELL MOTHERFUCKING NO! never again. it's like slave labor. even if you're getting free food that you're REALLY supposed to pay for and you make some friends along the way being on the register or in the back area, it's work that i would NEVER EVER do again. NEVER. i would rather sell drugs and risk getting shot at or getting locked up. i hear folks complaining about how it sucks to be in an office job. these folks actually get to sit in CHAIRS and work. they also get a decent salary too. @ folks bitching about making 13 an hour. much better than 6, 7 or 8. they actually get time to do what they do too and they're bitching about it. try standing on your feet all day for 8 or 9 hours, getting little to NO break in a hot kitchen having to act super jolly and like you love your job taking all kinds of shit from everybody because it's customer service. then you get paid NADA for it. you have to wait every 2 weeks to get 400 dollars which if you have to pay bills, you're fucked. if you want to do management work, it's even worse. you'll get paid more but then you have to do more hours. your schedule is hectic. you have to deal with your staff which might not feel like doing whatever. you get more responsibility where you have to watch everybody and your ass. customer service sucks. if i'm going to bust my ass like that again, it's going to be for the right amount of dough and my hours are going to be straight. i'm not getting hosed around at a job again.

i honestly think that would be fun as hell. the ONLY thing about it is the work to get into law school that makes it something that you really have to think about. i'm actually trying to get myself sorted out and figure out if i should do law school or not. it's looking like i might go ahead and do it BUT @ the same time, it's a shitload of work you have to do just to get into there. with that said, i'm trying to get my mind right so i don't wind up catching a nervous breakdown if i find myself getting stressed out with all that work.

Yeah growing up I also wanted to be a lawyer as it seems like a lot of fun when you are getting all the right arguments + getting the Judges and Jury's votes. Only on occasion I was put to do the "dirty work". And yes, although most customers were nice, some of them were absolute assholes. The restaurant was located in an affluent neighborhood, so some of the customers who lived in the area were arrogant and condescending.

you're describing what it was exactly like. a rich neighborhood and being a cashier. the dirty work seemed a whole lot better than being the cashier where you're basically the connection between the customers and the staff. if something goes wrong, it becomes your fault even if you aren't the one that screwed up and someone else takes the responsibility for it. one thing that i learned that makes the job easier is attitude. if you're superfriendly, nice and talk with folks presenting yourself like you're just like them except you're on the other side of the counter, they'll cut you some slack and show you love.

but other than that, there was really nothing there that was beneficial except the money (though it wasn't enough), the networking and etc. there was really nothing to gain at all. i always wanted to leave there from the time i got hired but i rode it out. when i got my college degree about a year and some months ago, i stayed there for about a year until the main manager of the job got transferred elsewhere. he was cool as hell. i would have stayed if he didn't leave BUT when they replaced him with another guy, that's when i decided to bounce. i knew it wasn't a smart idea to begin with because i would be broke but you know what. i feel like i gained a sense of dignity and clarity back quitting despite my mom and my brother shitting on me about it. don't care to tell you the truth because i would rather be at home chilling than to be there, slaving it and feeling five times worse than forcing a smile on my face and pretending that everything was okay when it wasn't.
