if it is not, is it still problematic?
its elicited some strong reactions from some tumblr users ranging from "fucking straight cis scum" to "I don't want to live on this planet anymore" to "Can’t we just shoot her from a cannon into the moon?"

just fyi, I dont think she actually said this. I think someone is just putting fake quotes on a screen cap. but thats besides the point. this quote could have easily come from some other straight girl.
(I went through this and I couldnt find the quote in question. unless its from another vid that I don't know of)

It can't be the real problem as long as a significant number of gay men are willing to put forward the stereotype as representatives of the larger gay population.

YouTube is replete with videos in which gay men intentionally promote effeminate, hedonistic, materialistic, vain, bitchy, and other stereotypical personas clearly intended to be their versions of out and proud.

The fact that they are some of the most easily spotted gay men should make it obvious that many otherwise oblivious straights believe gay men are ONLY those types.

So, it isn't really homophobia just because some people only look hard enough to see the most obvious people around them.

I think a similar distortion occurs when gay men, on forums like JUB, attempt to define gay as being all about sex and youth.

It's not homophobia-- there is no hatred or fear involved -- but it is a stupid generalization that many people make based on the stereotypes of gay men that are so pervasive in our society.

Anyway, if she didn't even say it, then it's silly for people to get worked up over a fake quote when she has actually said some other problematic things about LGBT people in the past. Better to focus on that than manufacture fake controversy. Tumblr and it's social justice bloggers sometimes get a little too carried away, but I know their heart is in the right place. lol

and actually I don't think its the social justice bloggers who are getting worked up. I think its the non-social justice bloggers like the casual users who are getting worked up as well.

Well, hatred of effeminacy or gender atypical behavior does often play a role in homophobia and transphobia. Some people get really uncomfortable when they see behavior that doesn't align with traditional gender norms-- especially towards men who are believed to be debasing themselves by being feminine (yay misogyny). So, in that sense, yeah, it is often part of homophobic/transphobic rhetoric. I understand where you're coming from, now, and I hope my initial reply wasn't being dismissive of that...

But in the case of someone who has no issues with LGBT people but out of benign ignorance (not malice) feels that gay men would all make excellent shopping buddies and relationship advisers...I'd say it is better to just call them out on being misguided for blindly following stereotypes instead of working to paint them as bigots. They just need a bit of constructive criticism.

I wonder if the number of these gay men you refer to is really as significant as you claim. Do they actually represent a large portion of gay population at large? Or are the gay men who don't "put forth" the stereotype are going unnoticed?

but really I'm sure my definition of homophobia could be extremely different from everyone else's so really I don't think its as clear cut and obvious as you seem to want it to be

Might not be homophobia but I associate it with ignorance and laziness. If people want to generalize because they only want to look as far as the eye can see, to me that is a real problem. They're keeping people in a box because they don't want to be bothered actually getting to know individuals and expanding their mindset when it comes to different types of people.

It's not fair to judge or generalize a group of people no matter how much a stereotype "fits" that group of people. If someone doesn't want to get to know people and run around and socialize, fine. At the same time, though it is a problem when that individual wants to generalize because they're not willing to do that.

I really don't have a problem with people who "perpetuate" stereotypes as much as I have a problem with the stigma that comes with any group of people, is that you have to be a certain way to fit in. People feel like they have to act or do things in a certain to way to fit in or impress people and I will forever find that utterly pathetic. Not so much pathetic on the person that is trying to fit in, cause I understand that. Pathetic for the people who will only like you for doing it.
