The station should loose their license. And of course there was going to be fallout. The privacy of the Royal family was inpeeched by an institution which had long, strong royal ties. What the CEO said in public means nothing.

I've read articles today about the Royal Family (namely, Kate) expressing their deep sadness at what has happened. Normally the Royal Family are kinda quiet and avoid getting involved in such media affairs, so her comments were certainly a surprise/breath of fresh air.

might be a lesson to be learned here and maybe some laws to be rewritten, there was a case here a while back where a radio prank call went wrong , they called this bloke pretending to be from his insurance company ( i think ) and told him his claim was being rejected , he lost the plot , told them he was going to their office to fuck them up and slammed the phone down , i dont know whether they managed to defuse him before he got to the office and blasted some innocent.

When I first heard about this prank, I thought it was a terrible thing to do, because I thought the immediate consequences would have been that that woman would certainly loose her job and be dragged through the mud of the British tabloids (which are the worst in the world). THAT to me seemed like very real consequences, and THAT alone should've been reason enough not to carry out/ broadcast such a prank. Not to mention that there was a third party involved (Kate Middleton), whose privacy was violated when she was in poor health. That the victim of the prank would possibly commit suicide was probably not something anyone would've thought of, but as I said, that there could be terrible personal and professional consequences for whoever took that call should've been on everybody's mind. Or maybe it's a sign of the times if in fact noone paused for a moment and thought of the consequences of their action...

That being said, I don't think all the blame should be put on the two DJs who carried out the prank. I'm sure there were other people involved/ responsible at the radio station, like producers, the legal department, etc.

I wasn't going to contribute to this - but good deal of the discussion here is far more rational that what is being seen in the media (especially that being quoted from UK) - so following is largely what I posted in the Mod Forum last night (when a Post report requested two threads on this be merged):

The whole thing is stupid. Immensely sad - but stupid. Much as I hate prank calls, radio stations everywhere do them - and the two DJs admitted, when this first broke, that they never expected to be taken seriously. The accents and voices were that bad I honestly felt that someone at the hospital was just humouring them, while saying nothing that would surprise anyone.

Personally I think the real culprits in this are the media - both TV and print. Here in Australia they must have played the sound clip about 5 times every half hour on the TV breakfast/news show I had on in the background that morning. But I think the real bad guys in this, if the coverage is what drove this poor woman to take her life, would actually have been the 'Royal Centric' British media that blew the whole thing totally out of proportion.

You only have to have seen the joking response of Prince Charles in an interview to realise that, at that stage, (before the death of the nurse) that he really didn't have an issue with it. No - the British media (who love to bash the Aussies at any opportunity) started posturing on their assumed 'moral high ground' - and the resulting furore generated is more likely what is to blame. I also have to admit that Murdoch is the worst example gutter journalism - and, IMO, it is the sort of culture that he has fostered that is giving rise to this. Ugh. Thank goodness he renounced his Australian citizenship - the US can keep him.

I agree. This poor woman must have had underlying mental health problems for this to tip her over the edge. Given that she was supposedly a devout Catholic, she must have felt bad as suicide is the worst sin they can commit
