Marriage Equality Coming to Uruguay

Uruguay is going ahead with a vote on marriage equality in the Chamber of Deputies next Tuesday, December 11, according to the Argentina Independent. The Senate would then hold a vote in 2013, sometime after the summer recess.

The country nestled between Argentina and Brazil has earned a reputation as a liberal enclave. Uruguay previously approved a civil union law in 2007.

Other countries currently considering same sex marriage legislation include the UK, Scotland, France, Luxembourg, New Zealand, and some states in Australia.

Uruguay would be the 12th country to allow gay couples to marry nationwide, and the second in South America, joining Argentina. The United States, Mexico, and Brazil offer same sex marriage in varying locations.

Off topic...

both of those are interesting judicial structures, one where the courts can order the legislature to pass a law, the other where the supreme court's dictates don't automatically apply all the way down.

The Chamber of Deputies just passed the equal marriage bill overwhelmingly 81-6.

Recent news is now saying that they will take it up sooner then previously reported. They reconvene in March and the President says he wants to sign it by summer.

Nepal politics is screwed up. Their gridlock is worse even than ours in the US. Without an agreement on districting, there won't be a constitution, never mind marriage equality.

Being from Uruguay myself, and having heard from one of the main gay activists here, I can tell you that the bill might be passed very soon, since the bill received an overwhelming majority at the representatives chamber, thus senators may easily agree to pass the law without much further ado and before the summer break (summer being January). But it's a fact that it will be passed whether it is now or next year.

As I told you a couple of days ago, the good work from the gay organizations has resulted in Uruguay passing the law next Wed 26th December, just before the summer break. This is great news, because it's going to be very powerful to end the year this way, there will be a lot to celebrate.

I'll let you know how that day goes, because it's a fact that gay marriage is going to be passed.

It would be excellent if it gets signed on New Year's Eve -- what a way to welcome in the new year!

Something I like is that this isn't just a "gay marriage" bill, it's cleaning up a bunch of things about marriage that have annoyed different people.

It sounds to me like it was more so due to pressures of accusations of rushing the bill through without following proper procedures. I have no doubt that the legislation will pass the Senate though.

Yes, that's what the conservatives say, and it might be true. But I think many of them had this as an excuse to try and postpone it, or as an excuse for voting against it if it was voted last Wed. Basically, what they did was to put pressure on the official party saying that they had no time to read the bill, thus they couldn't vote in favor. So the official party decided to postpone it (if the official party wanted to do it on Wed they could have done it). But let's be honest, they know if they're in favor or against, so the time needed shouldn't change their minds at all.

Now the LGBT groups are really upset and angry towards the governing party, because they compromised and the conservatives got their way.

Anyway, the votes are there, the bill will be passed. Now, the conservatives won't have an excuse so more of them will vote for the law (at the representatives' chamber, about 86% voted in favor). But they got their way and this is delayed until next April.

It's a shame cause they announced this on the same day. So all the LGTB groups had all the party organized, they had a giant screen outside the parliament to follow the debate and to celebrate, and now they had to cancel everything on the same day... That's why they were so upset.
