The United STates created the United Nations because we wanted a representative world body for conflict resolution. While it has not prevented all conflict. it has reduced the number of conlficts around the world. Along with proviing a foundation for a multitude of collaborative actions between nations that makes all of humankind better.

60 ways the UN makes a difference

This bill is simply another instance of taking what a member nation has done that is an amazing step forward for their people and try and put it in place across the globe. The recalcitrant and idiotic republicans who rightfully lost power this last election will be over ridden in the next congress. They simply demonstrated their abject ignorance and incompetence for governing once again.

I find some of the claims in that list to be jokes.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

Can you name any organization on earth to which you'd ascribe complete and widespread success on everything they ever did, though?

I dislike when standards are applied only selectively against ideas or groups that people chafe against personally. I have the same reaction when people point out the "corrupt management" of union money but the people most loudly saying that will almost never talk about the private management of pension accounts for non-union employees.

The U.S. has most certainly had some real flops in terms of policy.

    Hey Reardon,

When you look at the heavyweights who turned out to support this bill....I hope you understand that the bill's defeat has made the US look ridiculous around the world.

With an opportunity to demonstrate why the US should still be seen as a legitimate leader, the GOP has instead chosen to play to their knuckle dragging Tea Party base and tarnish the US brand again.

    Why do they hate America?

The Republicans are an unending source of embarrassment to America around the world. One of the nice things about being from New York City is that, when traveling abroad, when I tell people I am from New York City they immediately assume I do not vote for Republicans.

Nothing could make the US look more ridiculous around the world than your dear leader's many 'apology tours'. The damage is already done.

Has anybody noticed that HR isn't complaining about the waste of Senate time when Mitch McConnell had his bill brought up for a vote, then he filibustered his own bill? There was no other reason than for him to childishly throw a into Obama's face, and for what?

He deserves to be fined for entirely wasting the Senate's time on an immature, stupid prank. How much IS Senate time worth? This, of course, needs to be a personal fine.

If he wants to help balance the budget, he should "secede" his "state" (it's a Commonwealth), because I'm almost certain Kentucky fits into the prevailing pattern of most "red states" which are budgetary black holes, taking more Federal spending than they contribute in revenues.

McConnell thought he was being tricky.

    Reid was trickier.

We set the standards and models of how disabled people should be treated for the rest of the world, and thanks to Republicans, we just rejected our own beliefs.

Your link is a joke by the way. It's not just any "person," or American Joe. It's Rick Santorum, one of the most reviled and repulsive politicians in the United States. There's not a man in this forum who would respect Santorum's opinion on anything he had to say, so why you're citing him as a source is beyond me.
Thanks. Now I don't have to respond to his link. You said it for me. Thanks again.

    lol subtext.

Let's get back to the topic. Henry, you haven't responded to the reality that the United States regularly engages and partakes in international treaties. Your irrational hysteria over the United Nations doesn't justify the Republican response to vote down a treaty that any typical Congress would have easily passed. It was a bi-partisan supported treaty. Bob Dole rolled out of his deathbed in a wheelchair only to have a dream of his crushed by the most asinine partisan politics of his own GOP party. This doesn't bother you?

So the should have voted 'yes' just because a senile old fool asked them to? I don't think so.

You know, other members are taking the time to respond to your posts with well reasoned thoughts that respect your input and seek to continue the discussion on a deeper level. You're either ignoring them, or nit-picking one sentence in their post while dismissing all others. For example, you make personal remarks against Bob Dole that are irrelevant to my question of what your response is to the extensive history of international diplomacy and treaties the U.S. takes parts in with the United Nations.

^ Is the "On Topic" designation limited to discussion of what was in the OP (i.e. the Senate voting against the treaty), or "On topic via thread title" including other instances of conservatives showing their true colors (such as what just happened in Michigan this week)?

If it's the specific topic which started the thread, it relegates this thread to being "yesterday's news" while, more than likely, conservatives will continue to show their true colors in other ways.

    Thank you.

Thread titles are a convenience. The topic should be detailed in the opening post.

(In this case, just be reasonable. )
