The Rosa Parks you didn't know

Hope this thread passes the muster - it's sort of a news story ......

Yesterday was the anniversary of Ms. Parks refusal to give up her seat in the black section to a white person - way to go Rosa - Dec 1, 1955 was the date

It's been sorta understood that Rosa was a peaceful, quiet, unassuming type

The author of this piece says otherwise, that she:

in fact she was a defiant and aggressive woman - a militant really who spend her life and over 7 decades as a human rights activist

She campaigned for George McGovern ......

I didn't know any of this - and it's sorta cool

makes here more of a real hero vs. an accidental one

    Yes, she was.

This is not news to anyone who knows more than the white fairytale version of the Civil Rights movement.

She was a foot soldier of the cause and she knew what she was doing.

This is not secret cover-up land.

It wasn't embellished, it was changed on purpose into a fairytale like I said.

Next up Martin Luther King Jr. wasn't just an opinionated preacher. REALLY?! Who doesn't know these things?

I agree with ReadyWithReadyWit, chill out you two. Chance has said nothing offensive to the contrary. It's an informative read. If you've got beef with him, there's plenty of other on-topic places to take it up with him. This is not one of them.

Ditto, calm down guys. The Civil Rights Movement very deliberately portrayed Rosa Parks as an "accidental activist." Indeed, before Rosa Parks' arrest, there was another young, black woman who was arrested for failing to give up her seat. Movement activists did not believe she would be a good model for aggrieved African Americans as she was an opinionated, anything but demure, young woman. They prepared for Rosa Parks to be arrested, paving the way for the bus boycotts and activities to come. It was a wise move and effective. No one should be surprised that most people are unaware of this fact. It's not like the Civil Rights Movement, or any progressive movement, is covered with any regularity in our schools.

No reading of Chance's post indicates any negative intent. Quite the opposite. Rule number 1 of CE&P: Read to the end of the post before responding.

Ditto. This is NOT common knowledge. Unless you had a reason to have researched or read about this, you wouldn't know. Pretty much the only picture the majority of people are given of her is that of the accidental hero. Its a picture propagated by textbooks, pop culture, etc.

Stop being so condescending. This isn't common knowledge about her.

I knew she was more of an activist than the traditional fairy tale, but not all that's in the article.

This is the version we should definitely remember: not just an activist, but one who knew when to be in someone's face and when to just be quietly obstinate.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

I have to say I wan't aware that Rosa Parks was a militant.

She must have had a good PR company or a willing media to portray her as a soft spoken, unaggressive person.

There was no deception on her part. As I mentioned before, she had a previous arrest record. So it's not like she personally rewrote history and concealed that from people.

It was a whitewash. During this time period you had a lot of forces in motion-- some mainstream and some not so mainstream. You had Malcolm X and similar people-- the hammer and anvil of people you didn't feel sorry for but made you afraid of them. Hey, we're out here and we're sick of this. In the mainstream history books, you'll hear about Rosa Parks and MLK Jr. Neither one of them were just ordinary people who suddenly got spotlight. They were both working for the same cause, intentionally.

Why's Rosa Parks so known and so few others are? Because it's a story where the mainstream can feel good about itself and say look, see that sweet little lady riding the bus? We felt bad about segregation and discrimination when we saw that happen, so we changed. In reality it still required a year long boycott of the bus system by virtually 100% of the black population of the south to force change and what she had done was create the public incident to get that ball rolling.

Yeah, it was all planned. But on a casual read of history you'd think things changed because whites felt bad for blacks just as much as because blacks fought and planned and organized for it. Whites feeling bad was never enough to make anything change, social force had to be brought to bear on the existing order.
