Meagan Good Leads NBC's "Deception" (Looks Good)

People are comparing this to ABC's "Scandal", probably because they both have Black female leads . I really dont see any connection here. I am looking forward to seeing this. Very proud to see women of color on TV w/ good roles. And I do adore Victor Garber, however he does look like a meanie in this role.

Is it me or does this show have lesbian undertones ? Probably just wishful thinking on my part

Hm. Well, I don't watch Revenge. The subject matter doesn't interest me...

But I will give this one a try because I always like to show support for PoC leads. I hung in there for Scandal for this reason (and the fact that I love Kerry Washington) even though it's not a show I'd typically watch. I can't say that I'm still into it but it is great to see a WoC leading a hit show so I do look at its success with fondness. I also gave The Mindy Project and Elementary a shot this year for having WoC as leads and they've both been successful and great to watch.

I don't really have strong feelings about Meagan Good as an actress but she's beautiful and she's always seemed like a cool person. I hope the show does well and that it wins me over.

Girl! Revenge is really good. You may want to give that one another chance.

I adore the Mindy Project and Scandal.

While I already watch way too much TV, Im excited for this one. I dont love Meagan Good. Excluding "My Cousin Skeeter" on Nick, Ive found her roles to be either ghetto or one dimensional. I suppose that isnt her fault. Ive also fancied her to be arrogant (though I could be wrong). This seems like a really good character. Plus the supporting actors are AMAZAING.

    You're Canadian, right ?

I wish that Canadian shows would air over here. We are pretty sheltered when it comes to foreign TV, however everyone else seems to be privy to the stuff over here. Most of the time, when I want to watch something that isnt American, I have to turn to some obscure channel or search youtube.

lol, I think you may know more about her than I do.

Yeah, a lot of the time PoC don't have good material to work with so I think they just take whatever they can get to stay working. Sounds like she was faced with this dilemma herself.

On the bright side, yes, this seems like a complex, non-stereotypical role so fingers-crossed for her. She gets a decent chance to shine.

    Yeah, I am.

Well, to be honest, most of the popular shows we watch over here are American. We get all the major American networks and many of your major cable channels. Same goes for music on our mainstream radio stations, most of it is American. Our government actually put in place some quotas for Canadian content. Most of our Canadian shows air on the CBC but they're pretty shitty. Occasionally, we have some series that develop a cult following here and elsewhere (ex Degrassi, Kids in the Hall, Corner Gas, Are You Afraid of the Dark, Trailer Park Boys, Due South etc) but we don't have a lot going on to rival the U.S. and the UK.

So, we don't really have a lot of variety either (in terms of foreign content). It's mostly just from the U.S. But I rely on the internet to get my variety. There are many streaming sites (official and unofficial ones) that upload a variety of shows.

"Degrassi" and "Are You Afraid of The Dark ?" Thank you Canada!

I still watch Degrassi til this day and AYAOTD was my favorite show as a kid. I wish that they would play re-runs. I watch RL Stines's Haunting Hour every Saturday because it reminds me of good kid horror shows like AYAOTD and Goosebumps <--- wasnt that Canadian too ? I think

I get my UK shows sometimes from BBC America or the internet. Or public TV. I used to watch Mr. Brean and Masterpiece Theatre on public TV as a kid. People still watch Masterpiece and America adores Downtown Abbey which plays on that station as well.

I am too impatient to wait for British shows to show up on PBS or BBC Canada so it's the internet for me.

I am definitely going to give Deception a chance it is so nice to see another black actress have an opportunity to be a lead on mainstream television. I love Meagan Good she was excellent in the comedy Think Like A Man! I will definitely watch the show and Laz Alonzo is gorgeous!!!

I am guessing the media are probably going to compare Scandal to Deception because Kerry Washington and Meagan Good are black actresses but I need to see Deception before I have an opinion about the show!!

I also recognized that guy who played the closeted gay politician in that one Scandal episode. He is really hot.

lol, my lazy ass decided to find out his name. I meant Wes Brown.

    This guy:

Also, I came across a trailer released earlier this year when it was called "Infamous" apparently. Good thing they changed the name, it sounded kind of tacky. It's basically a scene from the pilot.

But the NBC site says you can watch a new "sneak peek" from the pilot they're airing. I don't have access to it and my VPN can't get around the U.S. Residents only block. Oh well.

Just realized that my girl Bree Williamson from One Life To Live is playing the daughter that dies. So Beautiful. I hope that there are plenty of flashbacks so that we can see her.

The pilot is up on Hulu (and other sites) now.

It was really good, I can see the show has a lot of potential. Meagan Good slayed. The story kept me interested, and so did the family who were all a bunch of miserable people. They were all very intriguing. o_O

Anyway, can't wait to see more episodes. I was not expecting to like it this much. The teaser trailer after the credits made it look really exciting.

Thank you for the update. I watched it twice LOL. I really enjoyed it. Its intriguing and fast paced. Im so happy for Meagan. I always knew that she was better than some of those parts that people like to throw at her. She brings something very natural to the plate, IMO.

I looked in the comments. A lot of the women are saying that she was bad and couldn't act. I wonder what show they were watching. Women are always so hard on other women.

As a Black woman, Im very proud of her.

Plus, thats a good looking cast.

No problem, I knew you were looking forward to it so I thought I'd let everyone here know.

I am tempted to watch it again, as well. I'll probably do that to refresh my memory once it starts airing. I am trying not to get too invested in it in case it's cancelled. That shit pisses me off. lol

Can't please everyone, I guess. I think some of them probably just came into it already thinking that she sucks or that she is not a lead-worthy actress. I mean I am not even familiar with her work -- for some reason I just remember her the most from that 50cent video, lmao. But I kept an open mind and she impressed me a lot and I love how she plays strong and vulnerable very well. The girl has acting range. It's great.

Some of the dialogue was weird and clunky, same with the pacing but that is all to be expected in the initial episodes of any show since they need to get a lot of exposition out of the way. I think that's what some of them are reacting to. Oh well. Personally, I give shows a chance and watch at least more than 1 episode before making up my mind.

And yeah, nobody on the cast has turned me off. I am interested in the possible love triangle with Joanna/Julian/Will. It will be so awkward and it seems like it may jeopardize the investigation.

Aw, lol. I think she won you over, no big. Maybe she is different now. Honestly, she does kind of seem bitchy but I think she just has that kind of vixen vibe going on so I can see why she'd rub people the wrong way. But then she smiles and starts talking it's like she is really sweet and down to earth.

I read that NBC had ordered 13 episodes but has now reduced the order to 11 episodes. Hopefully that isn't some kind of early sign that they aren't really confident about the show's chances. _

Anyway, not feeling the new promo posters. It looks pretty tacky with all the tabloids and the style is unflattering for Meagan. I preferred the other ones.

Will tune in next week although, reading through the reactions, I am already sick of people comparing this to Scandal. Apparently, there can only be one black female lead on a prime time drama and we have to root for one to beat out the other so her show gets cancelled. And so much of this nonsense is coming from other black women who are stanning for Scandal/Kerry Washington. SMH. I hope it stops soon because the two shows are nothing alike.

    Agreed.

I guess that they are trying to work the sex appeal in there. However, the show is pretty sexy as it is.

What is it trying to say. "Im a sexy cop" ? Its silly because she dresses in button ups and pants throughout the whole pilot. Im hoping that they dont stray too far away from this. The last thing that we need is for her to be flouncing around in clingly dresses trying to solve a murder.

I know. I was so happy when Kerry tweeted Meagan good luck.

    We should be helping eachother.

Comments are either comparing it to Scandal which is dumb, because the only thing that it has in common is the fact that they have Black female leads. That is kind of like saying that Roseanne and Ally McBeal were the same.

I can see why people are comparing it to Revenge, it is a similar show, but not an exact copy. A woman infiltrates a rich family in order to find the truth. This wasnt created by Revenge's producers.

The reviews are kind of making me nervous. I really want this show to do well.

Seriously. It doesn't even fit with how the character is portrayed on the show. It's like they just went "NEED MOAR SKIN" and decided to have a photo of her doing really bad SexyFace with a backless dress. It's really obvious that the marketing strategy is going for a 'sex sells' angle and that makes it so tacky.

Can Kerry be more adorable? I didn't know she did that but I am totally not surprised. Just another reason to love her, tbh. She's awesome. ~

Well, it's not really creepy when you consider that she is doing it to solve the murder of a childhood friend of hers. It's pretty understandable. But the character is shown to be conflicted and having second thoughts about it. She knows that what she is doing isn't exactly ethical but she feels that the end justifies the means.

I thought that tonight's episode was great. I really hope that people are watching this show because it just continues to get better.

My only critique would be that they need to cut Meagan's hair. Its just so unrealistic when you take in the fact that she is a no nonsense NYC detective. It just looks unprofessional to me. Or atleast put it in a ponytail. When she gets dressed up (lets her metaphorical hair down). There will be no contrast to her everyday.

For some reason, I started thinking...Just how long can they stretch out this murder mystery before it becomes seriously annoying? Or will they just build on it so that solving one mystery will only lead to another, and another, etc? So ultimately it will be a show about a corporate conspiracy and drug trails and not about a dead socialite?

If it gets renewed, I just don't even know.

Last night's episode was really good. I love it when Joanna gets to rough people up and show her tough detective side. Can't wait to see her interrogating Vivian's boyfriend in next weeks episode.

I am also ridiculously Team Julian/Joanna. I felt bad when he realized that she suspected he murdered Vivian. Honestly, they have so much chemistry and at this point I'd rather Joanna be with him. Will is just so suffocating and controlling-- what an unlikable character. Sheesh.

Anyway, I'm enjoying it and it keeps getting better but the pacing sometimes lets this show down. They need to cut out some of the dull stuff.

Sucks that it will be most likely cancelled tho. They ratings are falling, NBC doesn't seem to be doing enough promo work to boost the poor ratings. Oh well, I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

I really like the show. I hope that it lasts. Last night was pretty good. I was flipping in and out because Dallas came back at the same time.

I kind of feel like Joanna and Will have better romantic chemistry than Joanna and Julian. Its just not there yet for me. They have barely kissed. If we can get a lip lock in there sometime soon, that would be great.

I love Wes, but a lot of his scenes feel uncomfortable to me. I kind of want him to be a little more physical. However, Im not an actor, perhaps its his technique for this character.

The scene that felt the most natural was when Julian and Joanna were on the dock. In that scene, they looked like they actually knew eachother.

I think I just like Joanna and Julian together because we're told about their past and I feel like there's something for me to work with-- I'm more emotionally invested. But Will started off cute and it's just been really awkward since then. I think it's intentional, though, because we're supposed to pick up on the fact that they still aren't compatible. There's a reason they broke up, and it's kind of clear, now. I think he comes on too strong for Joanna at times and she needs her space. But with Julian, she likes the thrill of being around him and he respects her freedom/independence more than Will but he's not exactly the most stable guy around.

Anyway, the drug trials stuff can get boring at times. But I like that it's getting more of the characters on the show involved in the story. Because of this Joanna is getting less screen-time, now, but it's ok.

The scandal breaking out during the debutante ball with Mia discovering who her biological mother was...epic.

p.s. Prayer circle for this show and it's ratings. They've supposedly stabilized but they're low enough for cancellation. Still, I think there is a bit of hope, tvbythenumbers has it as a "toss up" in it's renewal/cancellation index.

p.p.s. Joanna's makeup and hair and clothes are TOO much. The styling is too 'sexy'...they should tone this down. It's just not suiting her character. She's an undercover cop posing as a secretary. Come on.

    Just saw 1x06.

So much stuff is happening, and so fast.

I'm really excited to see how the new living arrangement for Joanna will work, living with Julian and Mia.

And I still don't believe that Edward killed anyone but now he's about to go confess to the police. There has to be more to it than that...And I feel that Sophia suspects that something is off about Joanna. When she was gazing down the apartment staircase...yikes.

Can't wait for the next episode. It seems like shit has officially hit the fan and everything is coming apart.

    K so Ep 8.

lol @ "Ok, I'm in to the edge of doom." But it was nice to see Julian and Joanna finally go for it.

Joanna's mother depressed me though with her Alzheimer's situation. It makes Joanna and her seem so lonely.

Robert is creeping me out. He really has it in for Joanna, now.

A few more episodes left, I wonder how they'll wrap up the story.

Yeah, I played Julian and Joanna's last scene three times. I only wish that there was more. It was such a massive build up.

    Ep 10.

Cannot stop laughing at how much shit went down in this episode.

Between Julian getting stabbed, Edward's wife getting shot, Joanna's mother being revealed as a murder by Robert, Edward beating the shit out Haverstock, Mia doing heroin, Sophia doing her recently released ex-con boyfriend in a public bathroom while at a restaurant with her daughter, Robert paying to have Audrey murdered by FBI...like...

    Like. I can't.

    p.s. The thing I'll miss most about this show is Edward. This character is amazing. His awesomeness just sort of snuck up on me. ;__;

Yeah, it was a pretty good episode and when you listed the action like that, it does seem like a TON.

One more episode left and I really hope that it gets picked up.

I agree with you about Edward. I was gushing over him last night with my sister. He has something that just pulls you in. He's a great actor. Atleast with him, what you see is what you get.

I kind of LOL at the Terri McMillan reference last night. Like a sister can't read Nicholas Sparks or something. Terri McMillian gets on my last nerve.

True, true. He is the only character I find to be intriguing psychologically. I do feel for everyone else but for some reason, he's just so interesting to me. And his reactions/comments make me laugh so hard at times.

All I know is that NBC is having a really bad year. And the ratings stabilized for Deception a while back. At around the 3 million range. Not sure if that is good enough. We'll see.

Fingers crossed. For a renewal or at least a really good ending.

i love this show! i really hope it does get picked up for a second year, but i think it should go to USA.

NBC like pretty much the rest of Network TV has seen viewership slide big time this year and it keep getting worse. Gone are the days of 30+ or ever 20+ millnio viewers.

If it gets renewed, I just don't even know.
My thoughts exactly... I don't get the chance to watch much television, but I will DVR some shows if they're good. A continuous murder mystery just isn't for me... Much success to Meagan Good tho..

The finale provided NO closure at all. In fact it seemed to be setting up more mysteries and plot threads for a second season. It basically left us wanting more when they know it will be cancelled. At this point I'd settle for NBC giving it one more brief season to comclude it and tie up the loose ends.

Seems like a S2 would've been even better than S1 which got off to a rocky start but has been steadily improving. The finale was its strongest episode. Sigh. I will miss it. Fun show.

Meagan Good needs to find out who preserves Stacey Dash. That bitch dumb as hell but tell me she doesn't exactly the same as she did in Clueless. Probably gets embalmed every night.

I had to HULU it. I missed most of the episode because I was watching Bates Motel on A&E.

Its incredibly good, especially if you are a fan of Pyscho. I couldn't turn away.

BUT! Back to Deception: I like the finale. Yes, there could have been more but I thought that it was a solid episode. That Robert is a little more evil than I first imagined. That Katherine LaNasa is amazing. I can see how she broke her finger in that food throwing scene. I was so impressed! Im so sad that Edward's wife died He was great in that scene.

I kind of knew that we werent going to get all of the answers, or any of the answers for that matter. I didn't mind it, I love a murder mystery and its a soap after all. Secrets on top of secrets is the style.

I hope that it gets picked up.
