The issue here isn't really about being gay or not... it's about becoming more compulsive and destructive. The gay part just sells more papers.

I can believe an OCD side effect. With OCD people can end up doing things they never would, due to suggestiveness -- for example, rock-climbing up a waterfall when not even an avid rock climber. If one such experience give a positive return to the psyche -- if the person enjoys it -- the obsessive side can easily kick in, resulting in an apparent addiction to a behavior totally strange for that person.

The gambling issue isn't surprising at all, even if he'd never gambled before; the adrenaline rush from an early win can imprint on the brain/psyche so even when long strings of losses come the anticipation of another win draws onward. The sex part I don't see as being as likely, but I won't dismiss it.

The sex part is not that much different from gambling.

It's a natural rush/high which you get addicted to.

Some medications, particularly anti-depressants, may work too well (or correctly stated, an overdose) and push people into a manic state. That happened to a friend in high school. However, medication does not bring out homosexual tendencies.

Rape is about using sexual violence to exert power and control over someone and the victim's vulnerability and humiliation is what gets the rapist off. Rapists will target those who they feel will be easy to take advantage of. People from all walks of life are raped. Yes, even old men like the man in the story.
