The only "surprise" comes from the fact that we're all so used to hearing/seeing larger than average presented as normal that a western guy (particularly a gay guy) is going to have an inflated idea of what's average.

You *almost never* hear *anyone* on the net, barring fettish areas for micropenis and stuff, say they're under 6... even though, medical-average speaking, about half of guys should be.

Pornography of course is always going to heavily favor larger than average guys and larger than average guys are the most likely to exhibit themselves either in amatuer or professional settings too, further inflating the perception of normal.

From my personal experiences with over 70 guys in my life, the 5.7" average seems mighty close to reality. The biggest I've been with (2 guys) were 8", the smallest (mature age) was 3.5" (only 1). So, I agree that just under 6" is the average. But I'm amazed that this chart indicates that us Americans average only between 4-1/4" to 5". Something's wrong with that number. No way, no how. There are almost no "pure" African black people in the U.S. I know visually people see white and black people as very distinct but American black people are so mixed with white that the difference is much larger visually than it really is genetically, would be my guess.
