Today plaintiff couples in Darby v. Orr and Lazaro v. Orr, the lawsuits brought by Lambda Legal and the ACLU of Illinois seeking the freedom to marry for same-sex couples in Illinois, met with legislators to urge them to vote in favor of a bill ending the ban on marriage for same-sex couples in Illinois. The bill, House Bill 5710, The Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act, could be voted on by the Illinois General Assembly in January 2013.

So it could be a legislative vote? That could be good... getting it legalized through legislative means.

And just in case some religious conservative group tries to push a proposition to ban it they won't find much support...

One poll I found (from september) shows 44% in Illinois support gay marriage, 32% support civil unions, and 20% oppose.

The states need a Federal Referendum or simply a Marriage Act passed with full inclusion of all inferior political subdivisions.

    Go Lambda Legal!

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

Yup. There's a large amount of support, even in most of the more conservative suburbs.

Of course, it helps that the Chicago and suburbs have enough votes that it could get passed even without any downstate support.

This is great since Illinois doesn't have a binding referendum system like many states (it has a non-binding one, but that's it). Given the fact that Democrats have super-majorities in both chambers of the legislature and that Pat Quinn and Rahm Emanuel are pushing for it, same-sex marriage is virtually unstoppable in Illinois.

Naperville. One of the more conservative ones, but still pretty moderate.

The newly minted legislature is more Democratic. Even so, a January vote on anything major is likely too soon. Perhaps committee votes. I would like to see it done by March.

Was the year specified? The Illinois House is the closest thing you're going to witness next to a public circle jerk. One more time:

I think it's wrong that civil rights have to be voted upon. Either it's a right or it's not.

In 1967 The Supreme Court decided Anti-miscegenation laws were unconstitutional. No one voted on that.

Here's Loving vs Virginia wiki page. To read this now it's bizarre.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loving_v._Virginia

Based on an anonymous tip, local police raided their (Lovings) home at night, hoping to find them having sex, which was also a crime according to Virginia law. When the officers found the Lovings sleeping in their bed, Mildred pointed out their marriage certificate on the bedroom wall. That certificate became the evidence for the criminal charge of "cohabiting as man and wife, against the peace and dignity of the Commonwealth" that was brought against them.
Yep. The land of the free......

The implication was clear that it would be shortly after the Illinois General Assembly began its new session earlier this year. However, such was not the case, thanks to a coalition of black ministers and other conservative Democrats.

It isn't the IL. House that is close to your circle jerk; the entire state is a frickin' joke. There's a reason the state is # 50 out of 50 states economically. Unfortunately, because the politicians rigged the entire system to favor the status quo--meaning their continual re-election--nothing is going to change in Illinois. Despite this, one should not mourn Illinois's woes, because the people of the state deserve everything they get. They incessantly vote for the same people who do all the damage. Serves them right.

People seem to have this idea that just because someone has a D next to their name they'll be for marriage equality.
That is NOT the case and Illinois is just one example of that.
Republicans are still the main bigots but Ruben Diaz of NY,Teresa Paiva-Weed of RI did everything they could to prevent marriage equality in NY and RI and Mike Gabbard and Sharon Har of Hawaii are doing the same.

Too bad they can't hide behind the "separate but equal" mantra of civil unions anymore.

I must say that I'm annoyed at the slowness of Illinois getting on the homo-train. I thought that the homo pills we'd spiked the great lakes with would result in all the border states seeing the beauty and wisdom of man on man marriage. What does a Canadian have to do to convince everyone that the world is not going to end!!!???

Indeed they can't . While it stinks many federal benefits will still be denied to those in civil unions or domestic partnerships,it also puts to bed the myth(it wasn't true anyway) of these things being equal.
They never were, they were only meant to be stopgaps to appease us.
