Today plaintiff couples in Darby v. Orr and Lazaro v. Orr, the lawsuits brought by Lambda Legal and the ACLU of Illinois seeking the freedom to marry for same-sex couples in Illinois, met with legislators to urge them to vote in favor of a bill ending the ban on marriage for same-sex couples in Illinois. The bill, House Bill 5710, The Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act, could be voted on by the Illinois General Assembly in January 2013.

So it could be a legislative vote? That could be good... getting it legalized through legislative means.

And just in case some religious conservative group tries to push a proposition to ban it they won't find much support...

One poll I found (from september) shows 44% in Illinois support gay marriage, 32% support civil unions, and 20% oppose.

The states need a Federal Referendum or simply a Marriage Act passed with full inclusion of all inferior political subdivisions.

    Go Lambda Legal!

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

Yup. There's a large amount of support, even in most of the more conservative suburbs.

Of course, it helps that the Chicago and suburbs have enough votes that it could get passed even without any downstate support.

This is great since Illinois doesn't have a binding referendum system like many states (it has a non-binding one, but that's it). Given the fact that Democrats have super-majorities in both chambers of the legislature and that Pat Quinn and Rahm Emanuel are pushing for it, same-sex marriage is virtually unstoppable in Illinois.

Naperville. One of the more conservative ones, but still pretty moderate.

The newly minted legislature is more Democratic. Even so, a January vote on anything major is likely too soon. Perhaps committee votes. I would like to see it done by March.
