I would definitely join, since I think I'd be able to contribute. Although, I'd be slightly concerned, since from what I seen most soldiers don't come out in one peace. I say this, because those who make it out alive physically may have some form of psychological/emotional damage. But despite all the bad things associated with joining the army, I'd join anyway.

Depends on the nature of the war. If it's any of these so-called preemptive wars of the past 12 years, based on hearsay and lies...NO. If they attempted to reinstate the draft, then the war hawks in Congress better be the first to send their kids or I'm not going. looking at the Wikipedia article on DADT - I cannot say I particularly grasped it much - implies Not Telling meant don't announce publically your sexuality - several hundred were expelled and now it has been repealed whatever that means . Summarily it is not unequivocally stated that an openly gay person can be in the US military now . Don't Tell is a polite way of saying shut the eff up .

I would probably not be enlisted in a combat position (I'm 43 and not fit at all ). If it's a computer position or administrative, if it's a war concerning the the very core of my country then yes. But I wouldn't be able to take a fight or be in a position to kill someone, even if he/she is the enemy.

Im very fortunate to live on an island in the middle of nowhere so its pretty peaceful. Only time we have been occupied in modern times was in world war II because the British wanted to secure the area before the Germans. It was executed without any casualties.

We dont even have an army. Being so small it would be kinda pointless in the end we have to rely on our allies. So army service isnt really something for me to worry about.

I did 6 years in the Rangers (Army). Ended up in El Salvador for 3 of them. If I was needed I would re-enlist, but haveing shot/and been shot, it's not something I would do lightly.

Agreed. I noted as well in my response that it was a strange question to ask considering that I still have friends who can't get out of their active duty status after multiple tours. This is an ongoing issue for the U.S., not a theoretical.

If it were a matter of defending the country against attack or some other legitimate kind of war (fighting against an actual threat to national security, not against an ideology, or perhaps ending/preventing genocide), I would ask to be placed in a non-combat position. I abhor violence, and I'd rather avoid it at all costs.

I would enlist if the war was just. Reckon the US has not been apart of a just war since WWII. If history is any recollection, the next big war will be started by the US and it will most likely be with China. Of course, history is written by the winners so we wouldn't know if the US Axis would be the "villain" or not.
