From my experience the guys who joke around about it and seem kinda phobic are often bi guys in denial who get off on "joking around". It often includes sexual remarks and touching their friends inappropriately. A pattern I've seen so often and is most obvious in the teenage years when their hormones are all over the place.

Yes...a lot of times when a bigger, jocktype is calling a smaller, skinny classmate faggot it is because, he is turned on by their pretty faces and/or the power he has over them.
