Have you tried browsing the Lonely Planet messageboard? http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/index.jspa

That's a good place to start.

Be willing to book time for a holiday, but don't decide where you go until very close to your travel date. You can save money with last minute specials. Look for them now to get an idea of what is possible.

Be willing to eat like a local. Entertainment and dining out can be incredibly expensive; often you can find everything you need at a grocery store or market.

Plan ahead; research and find deals on things to do. Tickets in advance are often much less, and you can have them with you before your departure instead of paying on the day.

If you won't be travelling often, try to plan a longer trip.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

Most of the big cities I've been to have them. But not all. And using them frequently can cost extra for international drafts, so it's best to ask your bank about charges. (If you will be using a credit card, notify them in advance of your overseas itinerary.)

This is a large topic and I don't think it's going to be easy to make generalizations apply to all destinations. You'll get better answers if you can be more specific about where, when and how long.

I gave a guy a facial on the streets of Abu Dhabi. A cop tried to arrest me, but I pulled out my pocket knife and slit his throat. :c)

Re: Tips for travelling alone and on the Cheap ??

Well, the information that you are looking to is going to be largely determined by what countries you are traveling to. Every place has different things to be concerned about so you'll need to do your research before going. Here are some things to consider:

    - Check the exchange rate. Some places will cost a lot more than others, and keep an eye on the markets (it's always nice to travel when the value of currency is down in another country when compared to a dollar). Ask around and find the cheapest place to get your cash exchanged (remember they charge you a fee for that process)
    - Credit Cards are great (Mastercard and Visa are accepted most everywhere, so make sure to have one on you. Contact you card company and let them know you'll be traveling, otherwise they might put a hold on your card due to suspicious activity)
    - Learn the language the best you can (locals wont expect you to be fluent, but putting an effort forward to respect their customs goes a very long way)
    - Learn the customs of the country that you are in (for example, in China it is customary to 'haggle' over a price, and not doing so with private venders may be seen as offensive. Additionally, in many countries it is considered obscene to tip, such as France)
    - Be careful what you eat! Travelers Diarrhea (yes, that's actually a real thing) is largely caused by consuming foods with acid/spice combinations that you are not used to. Also, many countries (in fact, most countries) have very poor food regulation laws when compared to the U.S, so learn about the hazards and eat accordingly (such as researching and outbreaks of mad cow in Europe and not drinking tap water or eating salad washed with tap water in Latin America)
    - Get a calling plan set up. You can buy minutes though prepaid cars, get deals through your cellphone carrier for international calling, or use the internet. Research what is best for you both financially and by how you will be traveling
    - If you are traveling alone, always make sure someone (friend or family) knows where (roughly) you are. Check in with them when you leave/enter new countries so that if anything happens, someone will know where to look.
    - Pick-pocketing is a common issue for travelers. Never put anything in your coat or back pocket.
    - Always be respectful and polite. Remember, you are a guest in someone else's 'house' and you should be polite and accommodating to their wishes.

On another note, I would suggest traveling to Europe first if you are not very experienced. It's expensive, but the easiest for a beginning traveler. A slightly more affordable first-timer country would also be Australia.

If you are looking for something a little more unique, Sri Lanka is a fantastic country to visit.

    Hope that helps!

You cant change the way the wind blow's, but you can change the angle of your sail to take you somewhere else!!

Surprisingly, this does kinda work. Assuming you have money in your bank account, and a visa for the places you want to be in, you'll probably do just fine.

I hate the bunk beds and dodgy air con in those places. Also noise levels could be very high in the city.

    totally...

Take as little as you need to travel with and just do some basic research on Google before you hit any destination to answer any questions you have.

I also recommend Lonely Planet for novice travellers.

Re: Tips for travelling alone and on the Cheap ??

Several countries in South-East Asia are cheap / very cheap and easy to move around by yourself. They include countries like India and Indonesia.

In 2007, I have been travelling around for one month in Ghana (West-Africa), all by myself and without any fixed schedule. I have spend around 450 euro during this visit (everything included when I was in Ghana, food, travelling around, lodging etc, excluding the plane ticket.). Travelling by yourself, and on a relaxed way is an ideal way to get a good idea about the country, the people, etc. I would choose a country where quite a few people -more or less- speak the language you are also speaking (English in your case?), as this makes that you can communicate very easy with local people.

I always try to travel to a particular country during the best season of the year (weather related). So not during a very cold / very hot season, and not during heavy monsoons. Also not during Ramadan (when you want to visit countries with a predominantly muslim population). Be also aware of parts of the world witn malaria, and parts of the world where its dangerous to travel around.

Often, a local library has alot of travel guides. You can read them, and gain alot of experience from reading them. Lonely Planet has an exellent forum.

Which countries would you like to visit?
I am Dutch, so please excuse me for my low level of English.

Europe is a really good part of the world to travel to many different countries relatively cheap. Just get a railway pass and go from hostel to hostel.

And be sure to watch the movie the day before leaving

Yes, and in my experience hostels in Europe are nicer than in other parts of the world.
