I've always felt that more often than not, self-deleting is a hasty or impulsive decision. Many end up returning after a brief hiatus because the choice to leave was made on a whim. They might have felt under-appreciated, or some threads / members angered them, or the stress of life demanded they place their focus elsewhere, or perhaps they just felt it was time to move on.

In these situations, I think the best solution to this is to just... stop logging in. Perhaps in a few weeks, or months, they might feel differently and want to resume posting. I mean, looking at Hot Topics today, nothing really interests me. There's a lot of bickering and baiting, so I just choose not to participate. It doesn't mean that this place has gone to hell, or that there are no 'good' members left anymore; it just means that some of the more unpleasant posters are out in full-force at the moment. I'm fairly sure that eventually they'll either get banned or gradually sink back into their ubiquitous mires, as they usually do.

The tone of the forum as a whole is never permanent, and neither is our emotional state. Publicly self-deleting often seems impetuous and melodramatic.

Of course, I don't know the reason why he chose to self-delete, this post is nothing more than nugatory musing. I've just never been able to rationalise the decision to self-delete when one can simply take a break. Still, I've always liked Seghers, and the forums are a better place when he's posting actively. I'm sure he'll be missed by many.
