Wedding Trade Expects Boost From Gay-Marriage Laws

Link to my blog and the original article:

Nearly 18,000 same-sex couples in those states will exchange vows in the first three years after the new laws are in effect, estimated The Williams Institute, a national think tank at the UCLA School of Law, and the laws should generate at least $166 million in wedding spending in the three states over the next three years from in-state couples alone, boosting tax revenues and creating new jobs.
Wedding-related spending for in-state couples is projected be about $16 million in Maine, $63 million in Maryland and $89 million in Washington.

The numbers go up when figuring in out-of-staters who travel to those states to be wed. In Maine, for instance, the new law could boost the state economy by $25 million and create up to 250 new jobs in the coming three years, said Lee Badgett, research director at the Williams Institute and an economics professor at the University of Massachusetts.

I would say though, that we don't necessarily see the Canadian homos going all out for their weddings like my niece and her precious princess posse are doing.

I expect boycotts of any wedding shops which deal with gays.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

Funny. I don't. I think boycott time is over for NOM and 40 000 Moms...

It will be more dramatic in Washington, less so in Maryland, and even less so Maine. First consider the couples that live in those states have had varying chances to get marriages elsewhere. For example, I know three couples who married in DC in the last two years. No doubt Mainers have had ample opportunity to go to Massachusetts for a good eight years, and New Hampshire for three. Washington had distant California for only a few months.

However, western Maryland and Washington will likely benefit from wedding tourism. I can imagine a lot of anxious Idaho, Oregon, and Montana couples who cannot afford a destination wedding, or distant travel altogether. Western Maryland is probably not amused that it will be the center for gay marriages for West Virginia, Ohio, and western Pennsylvania couples. I expect the tiny Garrett County seat of Oakland, MD to solemnize hundreds of marriages next year from those states. Maine is currently surrounded by marriage equality jurisdictions. The price of coming late to the game...

NOM at least is made up of people who will believe they weren't "righteous" enough to win, so they'll redouble their efforts. Their very self-identity is involved.

The AFA and NOM mostly concentrate on conducting corporate boycotts, usually with little or no success.

I am unaware of corporate wedding businesses that would likely be a target.

The wedding industry as a whole would not be a likely target for boycotts as it is a service not used often by consumers.
