Duh.
The SC is going to announce the cases on December 20th, 2012. If the world ends, they don't have to hear the cases and they are off the hook.
If the world doesn't end, they can point out that by not hearing Prop 8, it wasn't the end of the world or anything if homos in California could start marrying again.

Ted Olsen and AFER have pacified some of the excitement by saying the court sometimes does this, or at least it is not "unusual."
Also there is some speculation that the delay is to give dissenting justices time to prepare dissents. Probably from the usual suspects...e.g. Vatican plants. Though, what there is to write about I am not sure.
