That's very true. They will keep pouring money in lost causes than in what churches are SUPPOSED to do - caring for the less fortunate - and they will continue to lose and blame everyone and everything but their backward morality...

What I sincerely hope for is that every other referendum (that doesn't occur in a Confederate state - I am not delusional after all) will be in our favor from now on. We should never let those douchenozzles say that what happened this year was just a fluke.

It has overwhelmingly and consistently been my experience with and near and talking to Catholics that they are almost singular among Christians in the sense of having this bizzare, never explicitly stated belief that the world is a living room that God is going to show up and visit as a guest someday and they need to keep it LOOKING REALLY NICE, even if it's not actually in very good condition. They don't seem to be remotely interested in actual, practical results... it seems to be entirely about the posturing and "making the statement." I can't even begin to count how many times I've had lengthy discussions with Catholic friends or acquaintances about topics like abortion (or really any other issue where their moral beliefs conflict with the mainstream) and you can tell them all the stories about how girls would go to 3rd rate unlicensed "doctors" for backroom abortions with procedures only 1 notch up from twisted coathangers and bleeding to death and everything else, and that even when abortion was illegal people still sought (and received) the procedure, only in much less safe conditions. And Catholics will nod their head and agree that's true and still say they can't go against God/the church/etc. in how they vote or continuing to oppose abortion politically and through donations and stuff. There's just this total disconnect where they don't really care if something won't do any practical good, they've got to put on a good show for God or something.

I find the whole mindset really strange, and like the rest of you said, I find it bizarre that they organize the bankrolling to the tune of millions and millions of dollars through various PACs and non profits and family foundations to continue trying to hold back gay marriage initiatives and everything else when I think it's pretty plain as day these things happening are inevitabilities and all they are doing is helping to deny a lot of people their rights in the meanwhile while they prolong the inevitable. When that money could be used for so many other things that would ACTUALLY do some good in a real, measurable sense, and not just in a "well when the day finally comes that gay marriage becomes legal at least God will see we obstructed it for 30 years."

If you look at a map of the confederate & union states, as well as territories in 1861 America you will find that a large number of areas that are very much against gay rights are not and never were in the confederacy. Too parcels in the nations Capital, Washington DC borders were changed to become a part of Virginia because Washington DC was a slave city. This would be Alexandria and Arlington which along with the rest of Northern Virginia is now a prime geographic area that is a strong hold for gay rights. It's really is interesting that southern Maryland did not become a part of Virginia as well. Southern Maryland leaned heavy with south. There is a reason Booth though he would find safe haven after shooting Booth in southern Prince Georges County as he tried to cross the Potomac back into Virginia.
As well West Virginia became its own state after pulling away from slaver Virginia and like other union state Kentucky are very opposed to gay rights, then look to the Midwest such as backwards MO, Indian territories (OK ), & Kansas

My point is there is a lot of opposition to gay rights in a hell of a lot of areas in the USA and they seem to get a free ride or are just classed as the old south, and they are not. It goes far deeper then just the standard backward redneck bigoted asshole associated with Civil war era Southeastern states. I think I would agree with religion as being the prime mover more so then geographic location

I think it's a mindset that comes down from when the Pope was essentially the emperor of Europe, commanding absolute obedience of kings and peasants alike. There's a belief that the Pope isn't just a spiritual ruler, but that he's supposed to be in charge of the world as well. And sitting there at the pinnacle of it all, the Pope acts like a total slave not to the Bible, but to tradition in the form of rules and regulations -- canon law has become more authoritative than the Bible, so if canon law says birth control and abortion are wrong, that's the end of it.

It's a moral system where thinking isn't allowed, only bowing down to the authorities. The only "scholarship" allowed doesn't permit exploring the meaning of things, whether the Bible or the Fathers or decretals of previous Popes, but in finding new ways to affirm those things as currently accepted. In this way they build a "weight of tradition" that serves to reinforce the same system.

Gert among a group of devout Roman Catholics and tell them the Pope is wrong. They'll be horrified, even though in Catholic doctrine the Pope is no more authoritative than any local bishop. The whole "Vicar of Christ" thing has nurtured a culture where to question the Pope is to question God. So it's not as though they think "the world is a living room that God is going to show up and visit as a guest someday"; with the Pope being sort of Jesus' little brother, God's already here.
