Re: What is your favorite memorable line from a movie/novel?

"I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice, not because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother's death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany." The opening line of A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving.

I also love the last line of this book, "O God, please give him back. I shall keep asking you." I am not a Christian and I don't believe in God, but just thinking about this live sometimes moves me to tears. As does this line from The Lord of the Rings "I will take the ring, though I do not know the way."

"My life amounts to no more than one drop in a limitless ocean. Yet what is any ocean, but a multitude of drops?" - Cloud Atlas

"How can a novelist achieve atonement when, with her absolute power of deciding outcomes, she is also God? There is no one, no entity or higher form that she can appeal to, or be reconciled with, or that can forgive her. There is nothing outside her. In her imagination she has set the limits and the terms. No atonement for God, or novelists, even if they are atheists. It was always an impossible task, and that was precisely the point. The attempt was all." - Atonement

"The good writers touch life often. The mediocre ones run a quick hand over her. The bad ones rape her and leave her for the flies." - Fahrenheit 451

Someone asked me once how I could know that I'm gay if I've never slept with a woman. I've never shoved shards of glass into my eye, either, but I don't have to give it a shot to know that it's not for me.

Ah, I forgot about this passage. A downwardly unsettling opening passage for a novel - and surely the best ever written.

No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill house, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for 80 years and might for 80 more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.

I forgot about this little gem from the movie Closer. Go watch it. Now. The script is fantastic.
